The capacity of the venue will fit 50 mats, and each session will be ticketed indivdually with an expected capacity of 200 people across the weekend. This would be the only free yoga retreat in Auckland this year, and would give 200 people the opportunity to engage with their health and wellbeing after a challenging period. Yoga can be an expensive and inaccessible with memberships and individual purchase of props and mats, and our goal would be to make its benefits accessible for all with free access to high-quality classes and teachers, as well as free use of the shala (venue space) and prop ..read more

You're involved in so many different initiatives. Can you start by telling us about the projects you are working on at the moment? I run two companies: Yoga Online and Breathe Repeat. Yoga Online is a New Zealand centric yoga membership site -- a bit like the Netflix of Yoga. Members can watch studio-quality classes when they want to practice at home, or when they are on vacation away from their usual teachers. I founded that almost 5 years ago, way before the current working from home situation, because I knew it could be difficult to be consistent in a yoga practice when getting to/from the ..read more

Yoga is more than just an exercise. And it's more than a series of poses. Yoga has been used for centuries as a way to reconnect the mind, body and spirit. The poses practiced in yoga are meant to keep the body as flexible and resilient as possible. The deep breathing exercises associated with yoga are used to keep fresh oxygen moving throughout the body and give the brain what it needs to function efficiently. The goal of yoga is to strengthen the body and mind by improving blood flow and eliminating stress and tension from the body. It is also beneficial when addressing anxiety and depressio ..read more

2021 has been an interesting year in for Valka Yoga in New Zealand so far. We've been fortunate enough that businesses are open (including gyms and fitness centers), so that we're able to continue normal operations and continue supplying our yoga studios. We've also been fortunate to have a few other interesting developments in the works. And most of all, we're extremely grateful to be living in a country where we are safe and secure, above all else. Valka Yoga on Top Reviews Our signature Chakra Yoga Mat made it onto the list of the 9 Best Yoga Mats in New Zealand. Although we are pretty con ..read more

Every yogi that has ever chased self-improvement in their own yoga poses has in some way performed some calisthenics movements. In fact, it might come as a surprise to you that calisthenics and yoga share more similarities than differences! What is calisthenics? Calisthenics is translated from Greek to mean “beautiful strength”. It is comprised of movements as simple as a squat to movements that require one arm or one leg strength. These movements can build lean muscle through pushing, pulling, or squatting and can develop and improve our motor skills such as improving balance and coordination ..read more

Why purpose-driven businesses are key to a sustainable future

As a copywriter, I thrive on helping purpose-driven businesses get the right message out to the world. I know many in this space face challenges other businesses don’t. Issues like where they source their goods from, the conditions of workers, and how to spread their message without a huge marketing budget. Often a lack of time, or the inability to clearly articulate their voice can prevent some businesses from making an impact. That’s why I'm here, to help them shout their values to the world so they can leave their mark. It’s my way of contributing and supporting a worthwhile cause. I’ve a ..read more

The Importance of a Morning Routine
Valka Yoga
by Valka Yoga

Here is my story - I have never been what others would consider a stable and routine kind of person. If you want a better image of it, my brother-in-law would say I used to "run around like a mad chicken". I’ve always loved exploring, meeting new people, trying new things and discovering new places. When I was younger, I used to think my life was so exciting. I thought I was doing things differently than others and I had plenty of self-confidence. I'm also one of those people who needs and craves change. I grew up on a tiny island in French Polynesia (and I mean tiny!). There is one single ro ..read more
