We save them and they save us Hot Off the Collar | Volume 24   We’ve had cats that have stayed with us longer. We’ve had dogs that were much harder to train. We’ve had dozens, maybe hundreds of animals who for various reasons, we struggled to rehome, but not a single one has endeared himself to the staff more than Pimms.  Pimms was one of eight dogs that arrived last spring as part of a transfer from Texas. Texas is one of those states that is constantly overrun with stray dogs. We don’t really know why they have this problem but we do know that adult, mixed-breed dogs have a trag ..read more

The kitten that came in from the cold Hot Off the Collar | Volume 23   At the end of January, Graham and Paula Christie noticed a kitten hanging around their backyard. They live in the country and this didn’t seem unusual but when Environment Canada issued a severe cold weather alert, they kept an eye out for the wee one. As the evening air turned frigid, Graham put out a box with some cloth and rags in case the cat returned and needed a place to stay warm. The next morning, the cat was below their bird feeder but not moving. Graham brought it inside and knew immediately that something ..read more

Passing the torch Hot Off the Collar | Volume 22   When I first met Christie Haaima, the Kingston Humane Society’s Animal Programs Manager, I wasn’t sure what to think. “Hey, I saw you pull into the driveway in that red SUV,” she said. “I was sure you’d be driving an old man car.” Admittedly, I’m significantly older than her. In fact, she’s the same age as my daughter, but that initial greeting caught me off guard. It took me a moment to realize that Christie was sizing me up. Many of us who work in animal welfare employ humour as a coping mechanism. It helps us face the soul-crushing r ..read more

A community responds the old fashioned way Hot Off the Collar | Volume 21   The world is a fractured place these days. The social media echoes of conspiracy theories or political rhetoric can discourage the most optimistic souls. When I find myself tumbling down that digital rabbit hole, I turn to my wife or my cats to provide a life-affirming diversion. When it happens at work, I normally take a dog for a walk or spend some time with a playful kitten. Unfortunately, we’re overflowing with both these days so instead of time with our animals providing a welcome distraction, I have been s ..read more

A view inside the need for x-rays Hot Off the Collar | Volume 20   For most people, the word “x-ray” evokes painful memories of childhood trauma, athletic mishaps or hospital waiting rooms. Whatever the association is for you, it’s unlikely that you would immediately connect veterinary medicine to x-rays. However, those familiar black and white images are some of the most important diagnostic tools we have. Sick and injured animals can’t tell us what’s wrong so we have to depend on tests and investigative techniques to arrive at a diagnosis. X-rays are a vital part of that process. Seve ..read more
