Kayak Fishing: What Rods and Reels to Use
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog
by Gage Gordon

Our rod and reel setups are the most important item for fishing because well, they catch the fish. No matter your fishing platform your rod setup will lead to your success, or failure. Everyone has their own preferences, and I am not here to sway you away from those, but I wanted to take a few minutes to showcase the equipment that works for me and why. Overview I fish around the state of Texas for both freshwater and saltwater species, primarily using artificial lures. I like my gear to be as multipurpose as possible to cover a wide range of techniques and the conditions I see. The gear list ..read more

Old Town Topwater 120 Kayak Review - Is it the Best Budget Fishing Kayak?
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog
by Clint Taylor

Fishing kayaks have become very expensive! It is normal to spend around $2,000 to buy a fishing kayak now after you pay for delivery and taxes. While you typically are receiving a high quality kayak, do you have to spend that much money? My response is no! In fact, I switched to the Old Town Topwater 120 because I didn’t want to write articles about a kayak that was only obtainable for a select amount of people. I wanted to use a kayak that appealed to a wider range of folks. Now, the Old Town Topwater 120 is still not cheap, but at a price point under $1,000 you are getting quite a deal. I ha ..read more

Going Off Grid - Fishing and Camping Remotely
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog
by Clint Taylor
2y ago
Me and my wife have been planning a trip to go off grid with my overland camping trailer for quite some time. The idea was to go somewhere remote, with clear water, good fishing, and the potential to snorkel some. We found a great spot to go and spent a little over two full days off grid! This trip started out with getting my trailer all prepped. Filling up my ARB Elements fridge with food and drinks, filling up my water tank, and ensuring my solar system was working as it should be. All of my fishing gear, photography gear, and related camping gear was loaded up among my 4Runner and trailer…a ..read more

Toadfish Travel Rod - Travel Spinning Rod Review
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog
by Gage Gordon

Does anyone else get serious FOMO when you see a fishable body of water and have no rod? For years I would waste time daydreaming when traveling or on vacation. Imagining all the fish that I could be pulling out, with no gear. Finally, I decided to stop this feeling and buy something that I could travel with. I wanted something that could handle a variety of species, large and small, regardless of where I went. What I discovered is for conventional casting or spinning gear there are limited options. Many of them are expensive, limited to one power and action, or too long for overhead bins. Thi ..read more

SUP Fishing New Waters
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog

There certainly is a lot going on as winter moves in with the holiday season and 2020 moves out. Typically, winter bass fishing in Texas is not ideal; however, you can sometimes find a good week to go. After monitoring the weather closely I realized I just might have a solid day to go fishing…so I did just that! I had been scouting out some new water to visit for quite some time - the water looked clear, scenic, and a good location to give a test run at. Lots of satellite research on Google Earth helped me to scout out this location, and after enough research I decided this was a spot I wanted ..read more

What Type of Paddle For Standup Paddleboard (SUP)?
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog
by Clint Taylor

I’ve had quite a few people ask why I bring two paddles with me on my SUP. When you think about it quickly it might not make much sense…but, after a little thought I think you might want to give it a shot as well. Let’s see why two paddles might be right for you too. Why You Should Use a Traditional SUP Paddle A traditional SUP paddle is essentially a single bladed paddle with a long shaft so you can stand and paddle. While there are some other nuisances, this is the basics.  A SUP paddle works great when you are wanting to stand and paddle, the wind isn’t too strong, you aren’t looking ..read more

Fishing the Devils River...A River of Beauty
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog
by Clint Taylor

While each river I fish in the state of Texas has something special or unique about it, the Devils River no doubt offers some of the most spectacular views, water clarity, fishing, and best overall experience you can find in the Lone Star State. On this particular trip to the Devils River me and my dad would be testing out a new setup…but not one for the water - for land. I recently decided to build a DIY Overland Trailer to take with me on my trips (when possible), and this happened to be the first true outing for my trailer. I knew it would be a good test too, as the Devils River has rough g ..read more

Pau Hana Big EZ Angler Initial Review
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog

The progression of fishing for me has been pretty dynamic. I started out fishing creeks and rivers from the banks and wading. Then I purchased a canoe and the adventure of exploring rivers had begun. After owning the canoe for quite some time I eventually got my first kayak, a Jackson Kayak Big Tuna. The Big Tuna really showed me what a designated fishing kayak could do, so I eventually would go on to get several more kayaks, including a Jackson Kayak Liska. A couple of years ago I ventured into a slightly different form (or more so platform) of fishing. I got a Pau Hana Endurance to try out s ..read more

Visit to Pecan Bayou on the Endurance
Texas Kayak Fisher Blog

For a short period of time I lived near a fishing spot called Pecan Bayou. This place isn’t anything extravagant or special, just a nice place to get out on the water for a short day trip. When I fished Pecan Bayou I didn’t quite have the bass fishing tactics that I do now. It takes some experience to become a halfway decent bass fisherman, and during the time I lived near Pecan Bayou my skills weren’t as good as they are now. I thought it would be fun to take a quick trip to Pecan Bayou, try out my current fishing tactics and see what I could catch. I used to catch a lot of bass, but not anyt ..read more
