Fly Fishing for Coho salmon on Vancouver Island’s west coast
Fighting a feisty coho, caught on a fly is exhilarating, as the Coho is often very aerobatic. When conditions are right, with the Coho salmon feeding near the surface, retreiving a fly on the surface can induce stike and then the battle begins. Be prepared; for as many coho to win the battle as you do.
Fishing at first light, with rod in hand and coho slapping the water all around the boat builds the excitment. You can see your fly on the suface behind the boat. As you watch, a torbedo surfaces and charges at your fly, your feel ..read more

Guides in Kyuquot Beach House boats live in the stern. Facing their stern, facing clients, able to engage in face-to-face conversation while staying in complete control of the fishing gear is something none of the guides could envision being without.
Years ago, whilst viewing a commercial troller, I thought the very complicated fishing procedure of fishing 6 lines and 100 hooks and navigating the vessel by one man had to be taken to the recreational sector. Working out of my first cruiser I was dealing with a few issues that really grated on me. My history of fishing to that juncture wa ..read more

Kyuquot Beach House 2024 Fishing Outlook
The short version of this outlook is that fishing should be productive in the waters around Kyuquot in 2024. It always seems to be that way, even though some years are better than others, but there are some data driven factors that support this optimistic thought. The managing authority, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), in early January released its own preliminary Salmon Outlook, with stocks categorized on a scale of 1 (poor) to 4 (abundant). For the stocks of salmon important to the recreational fishery in Areas 26/126, all are predicted to be a ..read more

2022 Lodge Season Recap
KBH had a successful 2022 season and now looking forward to a busy 2023.
Last summer was one of the better years for catching fish. Most groups limited out, at times guests had to decide what they were going to do with all the fish! Fishing was strong inside and for the most part we stayed inshore and never went out to the 50 fathom line! This was a first. Mind you we did go a few miles out in search of halibut. Check out Jeremy’s more in depth fishing report and projection.
2023 time slots with availability are listed on the website. Start planning for this summer ..read more

2023 Fishing Outlook for Kyuquot
Anyone who has done any fishing in the ocean over time understands that conditions rarely remain the same, with change often a factor in where we go fishing. Compared to recent decades, in Kyuquot there has been a significant change in where we do most of our chinook fishing, with almost all of it now occurring along the rocks close to town. In fact, at the Beach House none of the guides have ventured offshore after chinook for the past two seasons (2021 & 2022). There are several reasons for this – chinook non-retention outside the surfline prior to Ju ..read more
