Everything I wish I knew before roadschooling
Stark Raving Dad

Sunday, 10am, a week before Christmas. I’ve just pulled our car and caravan onto a narrow strip of gravel near the highest point of Arthur’s Pass. Arguably the most stunning of three alpine passes that traverse the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand, and - at over 3,000 feet above sea level - categorically the one that makes you climb the highest. Right now we’re at about the two and a half thousand foot mark. The car dashboard has lit up. Every possible red light is flashing. Thick steam is pouring from the engine bay. Warning. Engine overheating. Pull over immediately. Warning ..read more

How Do I Not Lose Myself When Homeschooling?
Stark Raving Dad
by Issy Butson
11M ago
"How do I make sure I don't forget about myself on our homeschooling journey, when everything feels so kid-focused?" Imagine a lighthouse. Standing tall, shining bright, providing constant guidance to those who need it. Now imagine that same lighthouse, but with years of neglect. Peeling paint. A dim, flickering light. It’s the same lighthouse, standing in the same place, trying to do the same thing. But because it hasn’t been looked after, it can no longer guide those who depend on it. You are a lighthouse. And to shine the brightest you can for those who depend on you most, you need to make ..read more

Will Homeschooling Mess Up My Child's Life?
Stark Raving Dad
by Issy Butson
1y ago
I think we need to kick this off by calling out the elephant in the room: What parent doesn’t mess things up? We’re all trying to do our best, but perfection is impossible. Being a perfect parent, providing your child with a perfect life, is impossible. Public school, private school, homeschool, unschool…the flavour of ‘education’ you layer into life can never change the fact that you're human. You're fallible. You'll make mistakes. You'll do your best to correct them, learn from them, and do better next time. But the fact is that no matter what path we take we’re all having a huge impact on ..read more

Does Unschooling Create Lazy Children?
Stark Raving Dad
by Issy Butson
1y ago
It’s a common perception: unschooling is a lazy form of parenting that will result in lazy children. That they'll use the autonomy they’re given to opt out of much of life. That they'll do little that's meaningful with their time, and become less and less motivated. Except...research tells us that’s not what happens when you give someone autonomy. Because research tells us that autonomy is literally a basic human need. A need that plays a critical role in the development of self-regulation. Which, in turn, is an incredibly important executive function used for managing not just our behaviours ..read more
