Become a monthly EHS donor We want to go steady with you! As an organization that relies entirely on fundraising and donations, we’re looking for supporters who are ready to commit to a relationship – by becoming a monthly donor. Monthly donations are an important source of funding for EHS, as it’s predictable and allows us to plan for our expenses. Our largest cost each month is vet bills as we ensure our animals receive high-quality care so they can be ready to find their forever families. This includes Oliver, a young friendly cat discovered trapped in an apartment closet after being left b ..read more

Meet Max, 3 years old Max is a Husky mix who travelled to EHS from a northern community near Nunavut. He lives in a foster home with another large breed dog, and his fosters have learned plenty about him. Like many Huskies, Max loves to spend time outdoors and with his people and is a big fan of routine. He will settle at your feet for scratches behind the ears, but if it's time for a walk, he will beat you to the door. Max has mastered many skills, including paw, down, place and following his nose to the kitchen. The way to his heart is definitely through his stomach. Max is picking up comma ..read more

Thinking About How To Protect Your Pets As we’re in the thick of winter, it’s a good idea to think about how to protect your pets as the temperature drops. Most pet owners know they should not leave a pet in the cold for extended periods. Certain factors (breed, age, weight, medical conditions, etc.) may influence the length of time they’re okay to be in the cold, but they all have a limit. It’s simple to determine when your pet has reached theirs. Just be sure to look for signs of discomfort (lifting feet, shivering, frequent stops, etc.). Aside from watching for these signs, there are other ..read more

Every Animal Deserves A Second Chance Change a Pet’s Life Day is celebrated annually on January 24th, a day to support and encourage the adoption of animals. Here are some ways you can make a difference in a pet's life this year: 1.    Adopt a Pet Of course, the ideal way to support the day from our perspective is to adopt a pet. Realistically, this may not be the best option for everyone. However, if you are in the market for a pet, consider heading to your local shelter to meet some animals up for adoption. 2.  ..read more

It’s that special time of year! Our Hope for the Holidays campaign is aiming to raise funds to help care for our shelter pets. This is our largest fundraiser of the year and helps to fund a significant portion of our annual budget.  As a small, independent shelter, we rely entirely on fundraising and donations to care for our cats and dogs while they wait to find their new forever families.   This includes animals such as Hades. Hades Hades came to us from a Quebec shelter, where he was at risk of being euthanized because he was having seizures. It was determined that Hades had ..read more

Giving Tuesday is a very special day for charities, and we hope you’ll make a donation to our small shelter to help us care for our cats and dogs. As a no-kill shelter, we believe every animal deserves a second chance at a forever home, and we rely on donations to help us provide care for our animals. This includes Elm, who was abandoned at our shelter on a Sunday afternoon with various injuries. The only info we had was that he may have fallen out of a tree. Meet Elm He was bleeding from his mouth and it was obvious he had other injuries. After rushing him to the vet, they found he had an op ..read more

Zoe Finds Her Forever Family Thanks to CP24

From TV Star to Loving Home In late September, we brought Zoe, a Labrador/Hound mix, down to CP24 to appear on their morning show. She was on her best behaviour and quickly won over everyone in the newsroom.  But she also caught the eye of someone watching from home.  Shortly after Zoe’s TV appearance, Rachel reached out to us and put in an adoption application. We are happy to say that it wasn’t long before Zoe was going to her new home, ready to live the pampered life she deserves! Before this, Zoe had been found as a stray in Hamilton and then made her way to us. We suspected she ..read more
