Ben Nelms/CBC Vancouver’s Park Board is sending an unfortunate signal to other BC municipalities that increasing vehicle traffic should take precedence over increasing safe options for cyclists.  By deciding to spend $350,000 to remove temporary bike lanes in Stanley Park, the park board is temporarily– and possibly permanently –abandoning expanded access to the park for people unable or unwilling to drive.   The board has pledged to eventually build a permanent separated bike lane but a staff report said that such a project would take years and cost up to $50 million, in spit ..read more

Government allocates $100 million for Active Transportation

New active transportation funding will allow the BC Government to connect community cycling networks across the province. The British Columbia government announced its Budget 2023 on February 28, and there is exciting news for people who use active transportation. The government has committed to significantly increasing funding for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) active transportation capital projects, totalling $100 million new funding over the next three years.   It all started with the sudden appearance of yellow bicycles, seemingly on every bend in the road, in our small hamlet. What are they for, people wondered? An art exhibit?   The Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services, a parliamentary committee of the Legislative Assembly, has announced details for this year’s provincial budget consultation. The Committee will be holding several public meetings to hear from British Columbians about their priorities for the next provincial budget.
