Effective March 1, 2024, the process for submitting and monitoring background checks for students, volunteers, and contractors has changed. This change was previewed during the February 8th HR Community of Practice (slides available in the  CoP Teams site). Beginning March 1, 2024, departments will use the Student and Volunteer Background Check Tool to initiate and track the progress of checks for students, volunteers, and contractors. New background check requests made by email after the tool’s launch will be returned with instructions for resubmitting online. PFML Premiums Set to Decrease in 2024

Washington State Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML) premium rates will decrease in 2024 for UW personnel whose work is performed in the state of Washington. More specifically, the premium rate for the PFML program will decrease from 0.8% to 0.74% of your gross wages up to $168,600 of taxable income. This is paired with a change in the employee–employer split for PFML, with the employee’s contribution decreasing to 71.43%. These changes will be reflected in your January 10, 2024, paycheck. Change in Background Check Fees and Business Process

Due to Sterling Check’s acquisition of A-Check America, UW’s background check vendor, there will be certain changes to background check business processes that will take effect this spring. In March, Sterling will retire the A-Check brand and migrate UW’s services to Sterling’s business platforms. We believe the changes below, enabled by Sterling’s service model, will create efficiencies for departmental HR and finance teams and streamline the hiring process. Effective January 1, 2023, the UW’s minimum wage will increase from $17.27 per hour to $18.69 per hour following the City of Seattle minimum wage. This change applies to all positions on the Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma campuses except for student assistants in Tacoma. The UWHR Compensation office and the ISC will centrally manage increases needed for any employee whose pay is below the new minimum wage as of the 12/31/2022 payroll. Washington’s COVID-19 state of emergency will end October 31, 2022. The information below summarizes changes to staff pandemic policies beginning November 1: Suspension of annual forfeiture of vacation time off balances greater than 240 hours will expire: Forfeiture of excess vacation time on a classified employee’s anniversary date resumes on July 31, 2023.
