By Thomas Christopher One bit of advice I commonly offer to fellow gardeners at this time of year is to have a soil test done before you fertilize. With the data the test provides, you can apply precisely the nutrients that your soil lacks. If, instead, you just routinely sprinkle fertilizer over your garden beds at the rate suggested on the product label, you are flying blind and that, as I was reminded a year ago, can have serious consequences. The fact was that while I was recommending soil testing, I had failed for many years to follow that advice myself. My wife Suzanne, an environmental ..read more

This year’s Earth Day theme is “Planet Versus Plastic”. One of our sustainability initiatives at Weston Nurseries is taking back used plastic nursery pots from our customers. We have partnered with East Jordan Plastics, a Michigan based manufacturer of plastic nursery pots. They are the only manufacturer who takes back used pots to turn them into new pots. We have placed a black collection bin in all of our locations. We ask that you shake out all the dirt before you drop them into the bin. As settlers moved to the Nebraska Territory, they sorely missed the trees they had grown up under. The lack of tree windbreaks led to greater soil erosion as they started tilling the land, and they soon realized they needed to plant more trees to preserve their way of life. On January 4, 1872 Nebraska newspaper editor J. Sterling Morton, long a champion of planting trees, proposed a tree planting holiday to be called “Arbor Day” at a meeting of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture. The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872 and prizes were offered to counties and individuals who p ..read more

It attempted to repair this oversight with a survey of her life and career on the most recent anniversary.  My reaction was to remark on social media that personally, I had always rooted for Mr. McGregor. Even as a child, I was outraged that Potter allowed Peter Rabbit to ravage the McGregor garden and th ..read more
