For Immediate Release: April 4, 2024 (Jackson, Miss.) – “The City of Jackson has been working closely with the Department of Justice concerning policies for providing death notifications to next of kin,” said Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba. “Prior to this collaboration, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade took the initiative to update and strengthen the policy that JPD already had in place. The new policy consists of a checks and balances system that will help ensure that all efforts are exhausted when making an effort to notify a decedent’s next of kin. For Immediate Release: April 2, 2024 (Jackson, Miss.) – “The Fifth Circuit’s decision did not resolve any issue adversely to the city,” said Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba. “All it did was dismiss the appeal on a procedural ground, and send the case back to the district court without deciding anything. Once the case is back in district court, the city will resume litigating the case along with the other plaintiffs. For Immediate Release: March 20, 2024  (Jackson, Miss.) – The bridge on Beasley Road between Hanging Moss Road (to the east) and Watkins Drive (to the west) will be closed to traffic no later than Monday, March 25. After an inspection, officials have declared the bridge needs to be replaced.  The bridge will be closed indefinitely. Motorists are asked to take an alternate route as city officials work with engineers to finalize plans to replace the bridge.
