'I Spent Every Day Really Thinking I Was Going To Die'

Gary Woodland last featured on the PGA Tour two weeks after The Open in Liverpool. At the Wyndham Championship he finished inside the top 30, the following month he had brain surgery. During the op the doctors cut a hole in the side of his skull the size of a basketball which required 30 staples to close. There was a risk of the former US Open champion losing sight in his left side and the use of his left side but the tumour was benign and the surgery was deemed a success. What was even more alarming was how the 39-year-old described the build-up to the surgery and what he was going through ..read more

In yet another very strange week in the world of professional golf we saw the end of one of the most decorated partnerships in the game – Tiger Woods and Nike. With the heads of the DP World Tour and the R&A, Keith Pelley and Martin Slumbers, set to step aside later this year it was announced that Woods and Nike will go their separate ways after 27 years together. Woods signed with the sporting giant when he turned pro in 1996 in a five-year deal that was worth $40m. The following year he won the Masters. Nike reportedly brought in $300m in the next two years. By the 2001 Masters he had ..read more

The Golfer Who Played 580 Rounds In A Year

Patrick Koenig did something throughout 2023 that some of us could only dream of while, for others, it would fill them with dread. The golf photographer and blogger from Seattle broke the world record for playing the most amount of 18-hole courses when he completed an incredible 580 courses over the 365 days. The simple maths of that is that he played an average of 1.6 rounds a day and 11 rounds a week. The previous record stood at 449 courses which was set in 2009 and Koenig left that in his rear-view mirror as he completed his journey at none other than Chambers Bay in Washington. “The fi ..read more

McIlroy: I Would Love LIV To Turn Into The IPL Of Golf

The big headlines last week were over Rory McIlroy saying that he had 'too judgemental' of players who had joined LIV Golf in the middle of 2022. McIlroy's position has softened in recent months and any possible criticism of Jon Rahm following his ground-breaking move to LIV never even got off the ground. Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast McIlroy described the move as 'smart' and 'opportunistic'. “With the whole framework agreement and the merger news in June, it has legitimised what LIV was trying to do, which then made it easier for guys to jump over to LIV Golf. Jon Rahm hasn’t go ..read more

Rory: I'll Be Playing More Ahead Of The Masters

Even in the current turbulent world of professional golf some things never change. And, given that it's the first week of January, there's the usual chatter of Rory McIlroy and The Masters. Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast he discussed LIV, Tiger, Jon Rahm and Manchester United and there was also plenty of insight into Augusta. The 34-year-old has played in 15 Masters, finished inside the top 10 in seven of them and has missed the cut three times, twice in the past three years. In between those blank weekends there was also that second place where he holed out from the sand at the 72 ..read more

Aberg - I Will Never Chase Money

In June Ludvig Aberg was still an amateur, now he has won on the two main tours and has played on a winning Ryder Cup team. And he's yet to play in a Major despite being the World No. 32. So some of the big headlines this week surrounded the Swede's stance on LIV Golf, something he was asked about on a Eurosport podcast. “There were a number of red flags, which is not good. We realised that I could potentially burn a lot of bridges and I wasn't interested in that. When I look back, I am very confident in my decision. I will never chase money; what I do is compete. I did the right thing,” the ..read more

What Was Your Shot Of 2023?

If you had to pick just one shot from the past year what would it be? For some their minds will quickly slip back to the Scottish Open at Renaissance where Rory McIlroy and Bob MacIntyre both hit brilliant shots into the 72nd hole. At Augusta Sahith Theegala chipped in, Tiger style, from the back of the 16th and Jon Rahm has almost hit too many to list here. Then we have Carlota Ciganda at the Solheim Cup, Michael Block's hole-in-one at the PGA and Viktor Hovland had a hole-in-one (of sorts) in a Ryder Cup practice round. But, if you were to narrow it down, then the Norwegian's chip-in on the ..read more

Lowry: Rahm Will Be Fine For The 2025 Ryder Cup

If you want some good old-fashioned common sense then Shane Lowry is a good starting point. In all his time he has very rarely, if at all, ever just spoken to keep someone happy, rather he just says what's on his mind. This week Lowry was speaking at the press conference ahead of next year's Irish Open at Royal County Down and it wasn't long before the topic of his Ryder Cup team-mate Jon Rahm's move to LIV Golf. "There’s no smoke without fire so we all thought he must be going,” Lowry explained. "[I wasn’t] surprised, as I am not surprised by anything at the minute. It is what it is now, it ..read more

Gary Boyd - The Pros And Cons Of The Golf Ball Rollback
Bunker Mentality Blog
by Mark Townsend

There has been a lot of talk in the media for a long time about how far golfers are hitting it and the boundaries people have pushed. In 2028 we are going to have a rollback ball where, with the updated test conditions, a drive hit with 125mph clubhead speed, with 11 degrees launch and 2200 RPMs, can only travel 317 yards. This will result in a 13 to 15-yard decrease for the longest hitters, 9-11 yards for average pros, 5-7 yards for females and less than five yards for most club golfers. For me there are a lot of for and against arguments. There is obviously the sustainability argument and ..read more
