Our Government needs to do better.

Periods should NOT be a penalty—in fact, they’re bloody essential! We need meaningful, urgent action from our Government now. Last year, through our #PayingForAPeriod campaign, we called on the UK Government to recommit to ending period poverty. A year later? Still no answers. And things have only gotten worse. Right now, household budgets are under immense pressure in all directions. 40% of those on Universal Credit are in work. Food bank referrals are up. People are having to make impossible choices between life’s essentials - and if you have a period, and/or dependents who do, that include ..read more

This blog was written by Becca, Bloody Good Period’s Social Media Manager. TW: This blog explores themes of depression and mentions suicidal thoughts, so may not be suitable for all readers. Please take the time to check in with yourself and how you are feeling before reading. In my second year of college, I was really, really horrible to be around. My mood swings culminated in either being extremely angry or extremely depressed - I swung from shouting at my mum over anything and everything and crying uncontrollably over the smallest things, to lying in my bedroom for hours; in the same positi ..read more

This blog was written by Amina, Bloody Good Period’s bloody incredible Admin Support and founder of ANC Admin Soultions - a refugee-led, refugee-focused company. The need to work, and to have some type of work that fulfils us and brings us joy and satisfaction, is something intrinsically woven into us humans. For some people, they find satisfaction and fulfilment through the work of real estate - for others, it's by doing mechanical work with their hands. Whatever the work is, there’s something about being able to do this work, in whatever capacity, that brings emotional and mental healing. Fo ..read more

Dear Friends and Supporters of Bloody Good Period, I am writing to you today with some bittersweet news. After founding the charity, Bloody Good Period in 2016, I have decided that it is time for me to step down from my position as CEO and move to pastures new. This is not a decision I have taken lightly, and I am fortunate to have had the full support of the Board of Trustees, as well as my wonderful team who have overwhelmed me with support and love since I told them my decision. I leave behind me a strong and capable group of people and a gloriously joyful charity with a solid, exciting str ..read more

By Terri Harris, BGP's Menstrual Sexual and Reproductive Health Manager. Recently on Women’s Hour, Amber Rudd, former Home Secretary, said: 'Our approach to Ukrainian refugees should be wholly different. We've got war in Europe.' Since 2014 - 24,351 people seeking refuge in the UK have drowned or gone missing at sea. In the ten years since the Syrian conflict, the rate of refugees granted safety in the UK has steadily reduced by a rate of 40%. From Iraq, where the UK laid the foundations for a refugee crisis, 12,844 refugees have been denied access to refuge in Britain. The human fatalities, c ..read more

Our immediate and long-term response to war in Ukraine, and how you can help Our TV screens and social media feeds are full of unfolding war, and our hearts are heavy. This manufactured and aggressive conflict, and the accompanying humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, both highlights and worsens the global refugee crisis. It is estimated that ,5 million people will be displaced by this conflict alone. In the short-term, these refugees will of course need support of basic provisions, including period products. We’ve spent the last two years reminding donors and authoritie ..read more

Gabby Edlin, BGP's Founder and CEO, with the hugest THANK YOU for all of your support in yet another 'unprecedented' year. Five years ago, I asked friends and family to donate period products for a local asylum seeker drop-in centre. Within weeks, my flat was full of pads. Five years on, and we’ve worked with over 100 centres, getting out over 170,000 packs of period products in a sustainable fashion that suits the amazing volunteers who run them. But we always have a waiting list, and we are always needed - because, as you (should?!) know, periods happen every month. And anyone who’s ever sat ..read more

Black Inventors: Their time of the Month by Liz Folarin.

Black History Month feels like an opportune time to shine a light on the underrated and lesser known inventor of the sanitary belt, Mary Kenner. Mary Kenner was born in 1912 in Northern Carolina during the Jim Crow era, when the #UnitedStates enforced anti-blackness via laws and practices such as segregation. In modern day times, we have seen a similar iteration in apartheid South Africa. Despite Mary being raised during racialised times, she was hungry to create inventions that would make everyday life easier. Some of her earlier ideas included a self-oiling door hinge and a portable ashtray ..read more
