If you are on social media, a member of the Society or simply stay close to community news, you will have likely seen our recent video campaign, #letstalkvitiligo. Released on the 19th March, the campaign was aligned with the release of a UK wide survey of over 700 people that revealed the impact vitiligo can have on a person’s life. The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has announced that it is now considering Ruxolitinib (Opzelura) or treatment of non-segmental vitiligo with facial involvement in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age. What is Opzelura? Developed by pharmaceutical company Incyte Biosciences, Opzelura is a medicine developed for treating non-segmental vitiligo. It is a topical selective Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor cream that affects your immune system, reducing inflammation and encouraging the regeneration of melanocytes to produce pigment over time. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) are currently appraising the clinical and cost effectiveness of Ruxolitinib within its marketing authorisation for treating non-segmental vitiligo in people 12 years and over. Our charity recently commissioned ground-breaking research to understand the physical, psychological and social implications of vitiligo. This major study, conducted by an independent research organisation, included responses from over 700 people and was the largest ever survey of people living with vitiligo in the UK.  The results reveal significant findings which highlight the pressing need for better support for people with the condition.
