Canadian ice dancer and 2014 Olympian Alexandra Paul was killed in a seven vehicle crash on August 22nd in Melancthon Township, an hour southwest of Barrie. Paul’s 10-month-old son, Charles, was in the vehicle. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Three occupants of other vehicles were injured in the crash. The Interlake Regional Competition debuted in 1975. The Arborg Skating Club attended the regionals from its inception to the early-80s, then returned in 1989. Who doesn’t love to snuggle up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and watch three hours of compulsory dance? Hopefully no one.
The International Skating Union’s announcement on June 17 was a longtime coming. They voted to nix compulsory dance at junior and senior competition, and will devise a plan to retool a short dance and free dance for this coming season.
Before this decision, the dance portion had three segments which consisted of the compulsory dance, the original dance and the free dance.
