Have you ever wondered about the power of resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity? Hi, I’m Davina Lyons, and my life’s journey has taught me that trials, no matter how harsh, can serve as stepping stones to triumph and personal growth. Growing up, I witnessed the destructive forces of domestic violence and parental substance abuse. Marrying young, I confronted the heartbreak of multiple miscarriages and grappled with my emotional instability, informed by my tumultuous past. Amidst it all, I made poor choices, the echoes of which lingered long. But even in the heart of such profound ch ..read more

The idea of “playing small” refers to the tendency of some individuals to hold themselves back. This means not fully operating at their potential. This can manifest in various ways, such as: not pursuing one’s passions or goals not speaking up in situations where one’s voice could make a difference not taking risks that could lead to growth and personal development. Why do people play small? There are many reasons someone might “play small,” including fear of failure, self-doubt, lack of confidence, and a belief that one cannot achieve certain things. Death to New Year’s Resolutions As the unprecedented year of 2020 has ended, you were eagerly awaiting a fresh start in 2021: less motivation to make New Year’s resolutions, just heavy sighs and gratitude for a fresh start. But, unfortunately, everyone I asked around me if they would resolve for the new year said NO! Ironically, a resolution is when a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior. Doing so will allow them to accomplish a personal goal or improve their lives. Yet, it is one of the most failed things attempted on the planet. Just because you ‘say’ you want to do somet ..read more

“How you gonna win when you ain’t right within?” – Lauryn Hill While driving to teach middle school this morning, I was jamming to my favorite playlist on Apple Music. The Doo Wop (That Thing), track five song from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, starts, and immediately I think of my youth and the poor choices I made. I began to reminisce about so many things that have led me to the present. Lessons learned and growth incurred. I’m great now! The words that stuck with me in the song are, “How are you gonna win when you ain’t right within?” I have asked myself that question (in numerous ways o ..read more

An unforgettable year. What a strange and challenging year 2020 was! I cannot believe 2021 is finally here! We started out feeling 2020 was our year for great insight and clarity. In fact, there were many New Year’s initiatives across the globe referencing the 20/20 vision. What we now know is that 2020 was certainly not a clear path, but more of a rocky road with steep inclines. When COVID-19 hit the scene, there was a ‘run’ on everyday food and supplies – grocery store shelves were cleaned out. Next, social distancing was mandated along with wearing personal protective equipment. Sadly, we h ..read more

Trapped, powerless, and isolated most certainly describes how women feel when living with shame. As I am preparing for an upcoming Authentic ME! Workshop for women, it occurred to me that shame has been the thread woven through the fabric of the women in my family for three generations. Until now, I had only stopped to think of my personal shame, not that of my mother or grandmother. Breakthrough and Reconciliation This week my mother and I have had a breakthrough and reconciliation. Why? Because I was willing to risk shame and be vulnerable. So was she when she opened up for the first time ..read more
