On January 9th, rapper Megan Thee Stallion was granted a five-year restraining order against incarcerated rapper Tory Lanez by Judge Richard Bloom. In 2022, Lanez was convicted of shooting the Texas-born rapper—known for hits like “WAP” and “Hot Girl Summer“—in a July 2020 incident. Yet, even from behind bars, Lanez continues to harass his victim […]

In December 2024, the District of Columbia’s Office of Attorney General sued Amazon for violating the Consumer Protection Procedures Act. D.C. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb alleges that the company denied Prime delivery service to paying customers in predominantly Black, low-income neighborhoods. This discrimination by tech giant Amazon exemplifies one of the ways that the […]

The recent murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has sparked nationwide discussions on healthcare access, corporate accountability, and technology’s impact on medical decisions. Public reaction to the CEO’s death has been notably unsympathetic, with social media users expressing frustration toward the insurance corporation’s history of denying health claims. Indeed, last year, a class-action lawsuit accused […]

This blog post is written by Tracy Esosa, a Nigerian visual artist based in the United Kingdom. In a life spent in constant conflict between multiple identities, torn between cultures, my sense of self was as fragile as a leaf blown about by the wind. I felt lost, so I began to root myself in what […]

Since Sexxy Red started to crossover into mainstream celebrity, I have noticed a re-occurring conversation about the 26-year-old rapper that appears on social media. Most recently, TikTok and Twitter users have declared that Sexxy Red’s popularity among white people, particularly men, is because she embodies controlling images of Black women as hypersexual Jezebels. In other words, since she conforms to racist and sexist stereotypes through her aesthetics and lyrical repertoire, white people are enthusiastic to support this St. Louis-born performer.

At a recent screening of “Jaws” in Massachusetts, actor Richard Dreyfuss shared his views on diversity during a Q&A event. The 76-year-old actor made statements that are being described in the news as “racist, transphobic, and misogynistic.”
Dreyfuss, whose earliest recorded television appearance was in 1964 on the show “Karen,” espouses attitudes toward diversity that are unfortunately prevalent in the U.S. entertainment industry. This perspective results from the deep-seated legacy of racism that both shapes and is perpetuated by the media. Indeed, the Motion Picture Production Code, kno ..read more

On October 27, 2023, the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) conference held a keynote titled “Celebrating 50 Years of Women’s Creativity and Resistance in Hip-Hop and Beyond.” Moderated by Janell Hobson, the panel boasted luminaries like Toni Blackman, Drew Dixon, Dee Barnes, Monie Love, and Joan Morgan. These trailblazers have navigated the turbulent waters of the hip hop industry, confronting and creatively subverting the misogynoir endemic in the male-dominated U.S. rap scene.
Take, for instance, the groundbreaking work of Joan Morgan. In 1999, she published When Chickenheads Come ..read more

St. Louis rapper, Sexxy Red, recently announced her second pregnancy, following a privacy violation where explicit content was posted on her Instagram. Despite speculation that the leak was intentional, due to her bold persona, Sexxy Red denies these claims.
The suggestion that Sexxy Red would willingly use Instagram to premiere her sex tape eliminates the potential for her to be a victim of revenge porn.
This ongoing denial of Black women’s victim status is a crucial topic discussed in Black feminist scholarship, particularly at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality.

If you’re already familiar with my work, then you know I do Black feminist sociology that draws on Black feminist thought as conceptual framework for the mixed methods study of digital society. In this blog post, I want to discuss one of the predecessors of the field: Black sociology.
Black sociology analyzes society from the standpoint of Black people to highlight how historical social structures affect them today. It offers a non-eurocentric perspective to address the interrelatedness of racial and economic inequality affecting society, making its practitioners scholar-activists who bridge t ..read more
