Ever thought about becoming a Christian Science nurse? You may wonder what they do, how to become one, and what the requirements are? Read on as Jennifer Johnson, Executive Director at The Leaves in Richardson, Texas explains more about Christian Science nursing. Jennifer: Christian Science nurses provide spiritual reassurance and skilled, practical, physical care for those who are relying on Christian Science prayer for healing. Christian Science nurses are established as a bylaw in the Church Manual (Article VIII, Sect. 31) under the Guidance for Members, “A member of The Mother Church who r ..read more

The Christian Science Practitioner as Persuader

In this blog we’ve discussed the Christian Science practitioner as next friend and helper. This is the third in this series, so we’ll end it on thinking about the Christian Science practitioner as a persuader of right thought. I love the word “persuader,” because it means “to move by argument to a belief or course of action.” Certainly, if one is being influenced or persuaded negatively, then none of us would want to be persuaded. But if the persuasion is toward a higher, clearer, understanding of one’s relationship with God, good, then the persuasion is not only good, but provably healing, as ..read more

Christian Science Practitioner as Helper What is the role of a Christian Science practitioner? A friend of mine once said, “It is as a helper! The Christian Science practitioner helps another see his perfection.” I love this thought that Christian Science practitioners are helpers, – spiritual helpers. Each day we prepare ourselves for any call that may come, and we do this by studying the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, and through deep, conscientious prayer. So, really, this is something we can all do, isn’t it? Whether we’re “officially listed” i ..read more

Christian Science Practitioner as Next Friend

One cold and wet day in Kansas City, a young woman was on her way to an appointment with a Christian Science practitioner and teacher. The teacher had been a solid worker in Mary Baker Eddy’s household and the young woman wanted to know more about Mrs. Eddy. So, she made an appointment to see this early worker. This young woman felt she really didn’t have anything appropriate to wear to meet with a Christian Science practitioner, but she did have a little pair of black velvet slippers which she could wear – even though it was bitterly cold. The only way the young woman could possibly get to ..read more

This week, let's study hymn 136 from the 1932 Christian Science Hymnal! It seems appropriate for the July 4th week and celebrations that we had over the past weekend here in the United States. Its message of freedom, service, listening for God's direction, is uplifting and it points us to the higher view of our God-given freedom, which is expressed in our everyday lives. Whatever we may be facing, God's power is here and now, and we can count on Him to direct us and protect us. This hymn brings out that any sense of human will is limited and ineffective, and would stunt our spiritual growth an ..read more

Part two of How Christian Science got started in Texas brings us the story of Mrs. Mary Smith Jones, the First Lady of the Republic of Texas. She married Anson Jones, an Austin medical physician who in 1844 became the last President of the Republic of Texas. In July of 1903 a bill was introduced to the Legislature, by the State Medical Association, that would exclude the Christian Scientists’ right to heal through prayer only. It had been so adroitly introduced that there was barely any opposition, and it became clear that practice of Christian Science was the target. Senator Hanger took the f ..read more

God-Centered Care -- by Jennifer Johnson

Many medical facilities have started to change the way they’re giving care. During the past twenty years, changes have been going on to use a patient-centered care model. This is care that is specifically driven by the patient. Patients get more say in their care using this model, and many hospitals and nursing facilities are looking to change the way they do things, to please the patient that they’re there to serve. Some of these changes at hospitals are as broad as single room occupancies, and less time in a waiting room, to valet parking and a live pianist on a baby grand at the entrance. M ..read more
