Is anybody out there? Does anybody care?

Confession time – the above statement has been going through my mind a lot this year; to the point that it has become some sort of mantra that I live by. Yes, I am going to admit via this blog something that has eating away at me for a very long time. I live a very lonely existence. If it wasn’t for my lovely wife (whom I count as my best friend) and my two awesome children, I would be totally alone. I really don’t know how I got into this sort of position. I grew up as a child, a teenager, and a young adult surrounded by many friends. But it just seems that one by one, people move away or rel ..read more

Just Another One Of Those Cranky Generation X People
Dad Joke Friday

Ok then, it’s about time I got on my grumpy pants. I try not to do it too much, but at my age I think I am entitled to wear this item of clothing now and then. (Or maybe it has something to do with the upcoming yearly festive season… it always seems to out the worst in people… especially me…) Anyway… one of my top five pet peeves is how people don’t know how to talk anymore. Maybe it’s just me, but I really hate it when people just come up to you and just start talking to you. There’s no “Hello” or “How’s it going?” anymore when a lot of people start a conversation. Where are the manners these ..read more

Off With The Fairies

Anyone who is a parent will know this scenario well. For example, just picture in your head the following situations. After you spent a long time cleaning up the kitchen, someone has come along and made another mess at the sink. Or you have just gone to all the effort to clean the floors, and there is already a fresh set of muddy footprints up the hallway. Or you go to the fridge to refresh yourself with a cold drink, and the drink container is just about empty as no one could be bothered to fill it up. You get the point. Things happen around the house, which result in you calling out who is t ..read more

The Never-Ending Interesting Conversations With The Pocket Knife Man

In case you’re wondering, this is not the title of one of the stories that I’m writing. That being said… it does sound like an intriguing title for a novel, doesn’t it? No, this is about an everyday event that use to happen on my daily morning walks. For all those out there that also conduct yourself in daily exercise routines, you get to know the “locals” that you come across every day. Since I live on the Sunshine Coast, about half of them are really snobby and don’t give you the time of day as they pass. (Maybe I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt; it might be too hard for some people to ..read more

Honesty is the best policy – Really?
Dad Joke Friday

You’ve all heard the saying, haven’t you? I just did a quick google search and discovered where it originated from. Apparently, the phrase “Honesty is the best policy” is a proverb of either Benjamin Franklin or Edwin Sandys (depending on your internet search engine). On a side note, the quote “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom” is attributed to Thomas Jefferson, as used in a letter to Nathaniel Macon (whoever he is; I couldn’t be bothered – at that point I was over this researching gig). Whoever it was, I agree with them… up to a certain point. I believe that honesty is a goo ..read more

Let’s talk about one of the things that most of us have to deal with on a daily basis. Whether you’re at work or at home, this thing is forever there; forever waiting for attention and our response. This is one those things that most of us can never ignore. Let’s talk about emails. As according to my five-minute research on the World Wide Web, apparently this wonderful thing called emails have existed since the early 1960’s; where computer-based messaging became possible with the use of time-sharing computers. An early example of this was the United States Military, who started using a message ..read more

Cherishing Your Childhood

As promised, and following up from my last blog, I’m going to talk about the kid TV shows that I grew up on. To put things in perspective, I was born in the seventies and my schooling years were in the eighties and early nineties. As I grew up in rural Queensland, I only had access to two TV stations – Channel 10 & Channel 2 (which was the good old ABC). The young ones of this current generation might think… OMG! How did you survive with only very limited access? Well… for starters, I didn’t know any different. That’s how life was like back then. Secondly, I was (and still am) an avid book ..read more

Nerding… Out & Proud

Ok – time to admit something – I am a huge Doctor Who fan. …and not just since it was revived way back in 2005. I grew up religiously watching Doctor Who whenever it was shown on TV; which was of course the legendary Channel 2 (ABC). Does anyone else agree that in the 80’s, all the awesome kids TV shows were shown on the ABC? (Or maybe that’s just me. Sounds like another good blog idea…) Anyway, Doctor Who was, and still is, an amazing show. Some of my earliest memories as a child was watching the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker episodes when they were shown way back in the 70’s. I also enjoyed as i ..read more

Happy Father’s Day! (and Happy Anniversary!!)

As you all know, today is Father’s Day (in Australia). It’s always one of my favourite days of the year. I usually get spoilt rotten; and it’s great that for one day of the year I get to be free of parental duties for the day. To be fair, I do the same thing for my wife on Mother’s Day. As all you parents know, we don’t get much time for ourselves when we are raising children, so it is great that for at least one day of the year, we get to kick back and relax. In case you didn’t know, Father’s Day is also the anniversary date of Dad Joke Friday. Way back in 2016, the Facebook page was created ..read more

The Unexpected Changes In Our Lives
Dad Joke Friday

Just letting you know that this blog might be a bit heavy. I’m talking about grief. The month of August is a bit of a sad one in our household; especially for my daughter. It’s the anniversary that her beloved budgies died. I won’t go into details here, but it was quite a traumatic time. Hey, even I was bawling and blubbering. I finally realised the pets are really a part of the family, just like human beings. I’m sure a lot of us have had gone through the process of grief. As the saying goes; death and taxes are two of the certainties in this life. But isn’t it interesting that we always asso ..read more
