The Subjectivity of Art and Style

As an artist, I’m often asked what my “style” is. In all honesty, I have real trouble answering this question. Well, I’ve never been into any of the more haughty aspects of the art world. An example of a painting in oils Standing around discussing, for instance, the juxtaposition of an artist’s choices has never appealed. Quite frankly I’ve never really ‘got’ it, and I find it all rather dull. Consequently, I’m careful not to ..read more

I’m aware that some of the product images in my shop aren\’t the best in terms of resolution. I’m working on getting better images available, but there isn’t a lot I can do about this currently, as I have to use the images my framers etc send me. With this in mind, I thought I’d take a moment to share some examples of how a few of my products look in real life. Giving you a close-up view to better see their quality. Canvas Prints To start things off, here’s an example of one of my paintings, The Kingfisher, as a canvas print: This is the mid-sized canvas option (12″ x 1 ..read more

In the second post of my Diary of a painting series, where I pick a painting and explore its backstory and my reasons and motivations for painting it, I wanted to touch on a subject that has been a fascination of mine since I was a boy. Planes! I live in Eastbourne in the beautiful county of East Sussex – seriously if you get the chance to visit the area, do so, it’s lovely – and every year for as long as I can remember The Red Arrows came to town. If you’re from the UK you’ll have heard of them, but if not they’re the RAF’s legendary aerobatic display team, roughly equivalent to the US’s Thu ..read more

I’ve been meaning to add my next ‘diary of a painting’ post, but life has been rather busy lately. It’s mostly written, so it shouldn’t be much longer. Instead, I just thought I’d write this quick post to tell you about all of the latest updates and happenings that’ve been going on behind the scenes here at TCC HQ. Another pet portrait completed Bonnie I recently completed another pet portrait commission, this time of the lovely Bonnie. This was a lot of fun to do, and really tested my ‘artistic licence’. Originally I’d planned to do a full-body portrait, and I set out painting just that. How ..read more

I just wanted to write a very quick update to say that I’ve just completed another pet portrait. This time it’s of Bonnie the Sprocker: This portrait was painted in watercolour. Initially it was going to be a full body portrait, but due to Bonnie’s feet being hidden by a very thick rug, I decided ..read more

Welcome to the first post in my Diary of a Painting series, where I will explore why I created a particular painting, and the thought and creative processes behind it. To start things off we have one of my favourites: The Seven Sisters. Who wouldn’t want to paint this iconic view? But that was the ..read more
