Wild Burros of Picacho (with Coyote Finale) Wild Burros sound off at night along the shores of Lake Taylor in Picacho State Recreation Area north of Yuma, Arizona (silent intervals between outbursts have been drastically reduced). At the very end, a pair of Coyotes give ecstatic howls and tremolo calls just before dawn. Listen also for muskrats peeping (near the beginning), the hoots of distant Great Horned Owls, the occasional staccato kick calls of Ridgway’s Rails, and the soft chuckling notes of Least Bittern. Note also abundant splashes throughout that I believe were caused by fish ..read more

Coyote Reverberations

Coyote Reverberations AT DUSK on July 11 of this year, I visited Cornell University’s Arnot Teaching and Research Forest, 4200 acres of forest and shrubby clearings, with grassy meadows blanketing a high ridge. Thankfully, the area is open to the public and the gates remain open at night, at least for now. Accompanied by fellow adventurer Beth Bannister, I drove up a steep road to the meadows and then looped around, parked and walked to a remote forested spot, where we placed a binaural soundscape microphone in hopes of capturing something interesting through the night hours. Adirondack Coyote Song

Last week, I went on a brief trip to the Adirondack Mountains with my recording buddy Beth Bannister. While our primary purpose was to visit a friend who is ill, we also planned to camp in several remote wild areas, in hopes of capturing engaging soundscapes. Late summer is a quiet time in the north woods, so our expectations were low. Over the course of our trip, we camped at three different locations, setting out multiple microphones at dusk and then letting them run through the night. For the most part, the results were disappointing, with very little happening at night (other than cricke ..read more

Catbird Night Song Reborn Catbird silhouetted against the full moon – art representation by Lang Elliott The night unfolds, the bullfrogs boom Bellows, croaks, bestir the pond Then midnight strikes, and none too soon The catbird clears his wakened throat And pipes a chant that quells the gloom And thrills the shadows of the moon … Catbird Night Song – The Birth I well remember that night, even though it was 30 years ago. It was the 29th of May, 1991, here in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. At dusk, with a full moon rising, I drove to nearby Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area and ..read more

Mockingbird Song Bout

Hi All! I think you will enjoy this video featuring a Northern Mockingbird, singing from its perch in an apple tree in late June. I captured the footage about a year ago in nearby Finger Lakes National Forest (near Trumansburg, NY), and I’ve just gotten around to editing and publishing it to Vimeo. I was in charge of the videotaping and my assistant Beth Bannister did the sound recording. We’re quite happy with the result and I look forward to editing additional footage obtained during the same outing. Note: The recordings featured here are “3D binaural soundscapes”. Please wear headphones for a profound listening experience that will make you think you’re actually out there, immersed in the natural world! While I’ve recorded in wild areas across North America for over 30 years, there is one species I’ve had trouble documenting … the Gray Wolf. I thought I had captured a fairly nice recording of a lone individual howling in the White Mountains of Arizona, but to my dismay it turned out to be a Coyote. Aarrgghh! Desiring to finally capture definitive wolf howls, I decided to look into t ..read more
