Does Garri (Cassava Flakes) really affect our vision?

Back in the day, I love drinking cassava flakes commonly known as Garri. Actually, garri was (and still is if you are a true Nigerian) considered the savior of students. As a student in the boarding school, even if your parents can’t afford provisions for you, as long as you have garri, you are good to go. But then, there was a story associated with it. It was said that if you drink too much garri, you will suffer from eye problems. Now if I remember correctly, the story back then was that ‘garri dey spoil eye’ But if you add milk to it, it will reduce the quantity of the component that spoil ..read more

Vitamins are great and essential for our optimum overall health. And most definitely for our eyes. Taking essential vitamins keeps Age-Related Macular Degeneration at bay. Deficiency in some of these vitamins can lead to increased risks in certain eye diseases and conditions such as cataracts, Age-related Macular Degenerations (ARMD), glaucoma among others. For this article, here is a couple I deem really essential. Beta-Carotene (Vitamin A) This is my absolute necessity. Not only does it help the eyes see in low light, but it also helps against Dry Eyes disease. The deficiency of this vitami ..read more

With many people spending more time before the screen, I have seen a surge in the number of people who come in with dry eye symptoms. The interesting thing is that most of them don’t even know that this is the problem they are facing. Some will come in expecting glasses while others will just request for eye drop. So in this article, I want to break it down as simply as possible. What is Dry Eyes Disease? Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film and accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability and hyper ..read more

Having an eye massage is a new trend that has been around in the European world but is yet to make its way to the Nigerian market. Fortunately for you, it’s starting to catch up here and I am proud to say mine is one of the few clinics that is offering this service and I must tell you, the feedback I am getting is more than I anticipated. So what exactly is this therapy all about? Well, I can’t say it all in one article so you have to check back a couple of times but I can start off with the basics. The eye and the ocular area is a very sensitive part of the face and it is one of the areas th ..read more

WHY YOU DO NEED A MORE COMPREHENSIVE EYE CHECK

A couple of days ago, I had to refer a patient to an ophthalmologist for further investigation and possible trabeculectomy surgery. This is a patient I met first in 2016 and back then, I recommended surgery and refused to issue glasses because I knew that glasses won't be of much help. The man left with the referral note and never came back until September 2021. By the time I saw him again, he is completely blind in one eye and the other has less than 20% vision. I had already forgotten about him until he reintroduced himself and I was able to find his folder and saw my previous recommendatio ..read more

THE PROBLEM OF WAITING
Doris Essiet

Yes, I understand the importance of the waiting period in life but today, I want to talk about a different kind of waiting. The "let's wait a bit before going to the hospital', let's wait and see if the pain will stop if it continues, then we go'. In a slightly heated conversation I had with a couple of friends, they pointed out that sometimes we (doctors) overreact a lot. They even told me that we always tell people that if the problem persists after 3 days, then they should consult a physician. They definitely emphasized the 3 days lol. Well, they are right but there is a problem. A lot can ..read more

Are Children Free From Visual Challenges?

From the moment a child is born, the eyes become functional. This functionality can be threatened by anything: disease, refractive errors, incidents, or accidents. But today, I want to talk about the refractive errors. Many times, parents who bring their children to the clinic usually start with “I don’t want my child to wear glasses” in which case my response usually goes “What you decide for your child is your business, for me, I will do the necessary tests and recommend the best form of treatment for him” That usually solves the matter. Kids wearing glasses is not a novel incident. Childre ..read more
