This September will be 10 years of treatment at Shriners. Wow. Part of me feels like it’s been a long decade and another feels like his first cast was yesterday. We were off for his yearly X-ray and clinical exam. We had a change up in our travellers this time. Charlie and Liliana were at the Provincial Volleyball Championships in Toronto so for the first time every they had to miss the appointment. But thankfully my Mom aka Granny was up for the trip. First stop was X-ray. Then weight and height check. The Dr Pahys did his clinical exam. . And as always, while holding my breath, he said t ..read more

It’s been a very long time, but we finally made it back to Shriners. Last time we were at the hospital was December 2019. Then the world went upside down. With restrictions and testing at the border finally lifted, we were able to cross. Rocco was able to get a X-ray at the hospital and have clinical exam by his surgeon. It was so great to see their faces and give hugs. Rocco’s last X-ray was a year ago at home and we mailed it to Shriners. We are thrilled that his back has remained straight throughout Covid! His doctor was very pleased. He told us that we can come back in a year. He has come ..read more

How is everyone doing? It’s June 2021 and we are STILL in a pandemic! Since the boarders are still closed with no time lines with them opening, we had to get another X-ray here and send it to Rocco’s doctor. It has been an extremely hard year. But one blessing is that Rocco’s back is holding straight! He’s still at about 7 degrees top and bottom curve. And as always that’s with a 5 degree grace. Anything under about 10 degrees is straight. Fingers (and everything else) crossed we can get to Erie by the end of the year. And because this kid likes to keep us on our toes, in March he had ear sur ..read more

Covid X-Ray

Well, how’s everyone doing?  2020 is now what anyone thought it would be.  So, on top of a world pandemic, lock down and general uncertainty, Rocco was suppose to have a follow-up x-ray in June.  Even with the borders closed, we could cross as medical treatments are deemed essential.  But with the US Covid numbers, we didn’t feel comfortable with that.  We decided to take a chance on a x-ray in Canada and mail in to Erie for Rocco’s doctor to review.  Rocco has not had a x-ray in Canada in 7 years.  We have had horrible experiences getting him an accurate bac ..read more

Back in Erie for Rocco’s X-ray and check up. It has now been two years that Rocco has been out of a cast or a brace. So we have held our breath for these out of treatment X-rays. But, miracles happen and we believe in the power of prayer. Below are his last three xrays. Dec 2019. June 2019. Dec 2018. As you can see, his back appears to have progressively gotten straighter in the past year. Again, with no cast or brace. All on his own. When I asked his doctor how this could be possible, he smiled, kicked my foot alittle and said ‘don’t question it’. His top curve was now measured at 8.9 degre ..read more

We were told 7 years ago by “one of the best” paediatric orthopaedic doctors that Rocco would never play any competitive sports. She was very matter a fact and firm on that conclusion. Rocco has played soccer though out the years, but skills leagues. This was this first year Rocco played competitive soccer. His team played academy festivals this summer in Hamilton, Ancaster, Brantford and Paris with 10 wins, 2 loses. With every goal Rocco scored or every team win, that doctor kept creeping into my mind. Rocco will forever remind me to keep pushing on and much more is possible then anything ‘on ..read more

Earlier this month we went back to Erie for his now 18 month check out of his brace. His back actually looked better in this X-ray then in December. His curve is 12 degrees top and 9 degrees bottom. The goal was alway 10 degrees so he is right where we prayed for him to be. We go back in December for another X-ray. Again for reference, this is him now and where he started from. We also have his doctor alittle gift. Happy International Scoliosis Awareness Day! Please take a look at the Shriners website about Scoliosis. Also has Rocco’s doctor in it. https://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org ..read more

I was very sad to hear that today we lost the creator of Mehta casting ( Dr Min Mehta) She is the inventor of the cast that has helped so many Scoliosis children. We will be eternally grateful to her dedication in not giving up on children like Rocco to create a safe treatment to correct his spine. Her soul can smile tonight in heaven as she can see the thousands of children she has saved ..read more

Here’s a story about how we thought we’d take a quick day trip down to Erie and it turned into a disaster and us not arriving home until 3am! So, it begin with Rocco has been saying that his brace was tight and when we took it off he, had a lot a redness on his hips that he doesn’t usually have. So we emailed pictures to Tim and he agreed that it was to tight and it needed adjusting.  We decided to make it a quick day trip. Drive to Erie, get it adjusted, have some lunch, do some shopping and come back home. We have done it in a day before so no problem, right?!  We cross over the b ..read more
