One Button Fighting

Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6 both appear to be pushing for an option to reduce the in-game fighting to one-button alone if needed. Above is the Input Support Configuration Screen for the under development Tekken 8 I beleive. One Button (probably more) can be set to activate a variety of actions. Here, press once to throw. x2 for a simple combo. x3 for simple combo 2. x4 for "Rage Arts". And there's some finesse too, with getting extra control. I remember early test with Tekken 1-3 with one-button play, where the player just stood on the spot kicking or punching the air. It was with Tekken ..read more

Top End Driving Accessibility

Brandon Fuller is a serious competitive driver. He got in touch with SpecialEffect some months back and ended up taking his entire ultra high-end driving kit to explain the difficulties he was having with manual gear changes. With OT support, two switches carefully positioned and a switch box for shift up and down (built from the guts of a Fanatec ClubSport Static Shifter Paddle set), Brandon is competing with some of the best with faster times than before. I was happy to help with the supply of the switch interface. And I'm definitely jealous of his Olympian driving set-up. At a ..read more

Project Gameface

"Project Gameface is a new open-source hands-free gaming mouse that enables people to control a computer's cursor using their head movement and facial gestures. People can raise their eyebrows to click and drag, or open their mouth to move the cursor, making it possible for anyone to pursue gaming." From my initial testing, I was unable to get mouse pointer movement working. It just did nothing. However, I was able to very reliably get mouse button / keyboard binding working very well with some facial gestures and the "Gesture size" slider (from subtle to exaggerated). Output works in a mome ..read more

MouthPad

Last month, Augmental Tech announced their MouthPad^ controller. It consists of a resin dental palate mouth piece, with analogue touch-pad, blue-tooth and a sealed rechargeable battery. Dental palate controllers date back to at least 1972, with the Finnish Research Institute for Bioengineering's "Typewriter Control By Dental Palate Key" (using Finish Morse Code - see photo below). More advanced systems followed in the 1990s and beyond for analogue computer control. However, Augmental's system is clearly the most refined and least invasive to date. This one has no wires, no he ..read more

The One Button Game Jam 2023 is underway, ending on the 2nd of June 2023. The same compo turned up some interesting games including the brilliant Chill Balloon from jason-indie. If any developers are wondering, they may find the Cause and Effect and Low Pressure games at OneSwitch of interest.  The Playability Initiative inspired this particular game coding competition and it's been running on and off since 2020. They're encouraging coders to consider switch users with slower reactions which is really important ..read more

Deaf-Blind Gaming Research 2023

"Arthur Theil, Birmingham City University. Digital games, in general, rely heavily on visual and auditory content to present information to players. Deafblind people must confront a series of barriers to gameplay: limited options of self-representation, a perceived lack of complexity in games, the necessity for engagement with decades-old text-based technologies, and fears of being ”left in the dust” by new and emerging technologies. In this talk, I will share the findings of my research with gamers who live with dual sensory disabilities across different European countries. The talk will add ..read more

Very impressive boost to the latest Forza game. Grant Stoner has posted on IGN some more details. Brandon Cole has supported the Turn 10 Studios over the past two years to get racing, and I believe the menu system, fully blind accessible. One button/touch play too it seems. Great news. Looking forward to trying it ..read more
