THE CULTIVATION OF SHRIMPS IN TRADITIONAL EARTHEN POND SYSTEM | PART 2
RAS Aquaculture Blog

In the previous post, we touched on the benefits of outdoor shrimp farming systems and how it was a dream come through for inland farmers like us. However, upon the operation of the site, we realized that the outdoor shrimp farming system has its own unique set of challenges. In this post, we will try to uncover some of the challenges that are not so obvious until you start to operate the outdoor ponds. Water availability (TIDE BASED) Despite being 300-400 meters from the coast, you will not be able to get good quality seawater daily. On average, you will only be able to get 12-16 days of goo ..read more

https://youtu.be/m-TmMNrNj3o For those who have regularly checked out our progress on Youtube / Facebook, you will have probably realized that we have taken over an abandoned shrimp pond in Malaysia. So in addition to our indoor shrimp farms, we will also have to manage the cultivation of shrimp in traditional earthen pond systems. Fortunately, we have already successfully completed one cycle of crop of Litopenaeus Vannamei. Our objectives for taking over the location is to experiment how our indoor farming techniques could help to improve production for outdoor pond farmers, and we decided th ..read more

How Did We Handle the Purplish Biofloc Problem?
RAS Aquaculture Blog
by Fatina Athira
2y ago
RAS Aquaculture recently encountered a purplish biofloc problem from our small biofloc system in the crab farm. Because of the molasses, the normally brownish biofloc turned purplish. We were fortunate that it did not result in a high rate of shrimp mortality. Otherwise, it would be a huge setback for us. Now that the problem has been resolved, we'd like to share our methods for restoring the biofloc to normalcy. To learn more, keep reading this post until the end. https://youtu.be/3R5AqKCCNg8 It is actually quite hard and typical to see photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) on biofloc. However before ..read more

Who Can You Sell Your Live Shrimp to?
RAS Aquaculture Blog
by Fatina Athira

Today, we're going to talk about the live shrimp we brought from Mersing (where our outdoor shrimp farm is located). If you've ever wondered to whom we sell the shrimp and how we keep it in the crab farm for the time being, read the article until the end. https://youtu.be/EhQK1P2c_7Q RAS Aquaculture has an outdoor pond-based shrimp farm in Mersing, Johor, in addition to the indoor shrimp farm that uses biofloc technology. We primarily harvest shrimp from the shrimp pond once they have grown large enough to be harvested. In the past week, we have harvested hundreds of kilograms of shrimp to sel ..read more

OVERVIEW OF AQUAPONICS TILAPIA IN RAS AQUACULTURE
RAS Aquaculture Blog

Tilapia is a popular fish species grown in aquaponics systems. They are known as one of the toughest fish, able to adapt to changing environments and survive in a wide range of water conditions. This popular fish species isn't just good for fish fillets; it's also one of the best fish for aquaponic gardening, particularly for beginners. In this post, we will give you an overview of the aquaponics system at RAS Aquaculture. In addition to mud crab and shrimp farming, we have a small aquaponics system here where we grow both plants and tilapia fish. https://youtu.be/rm19P48TLOE Aquaponics is the ..read more

IS THERE A BETTER TANK THAN PVC TANK?
RAS Aquaculture Blog
by Fatina Athira

https://youtu.be/_7l4TwDhvmA In this blog post, we are going to give you guys a little bit of an update of our PVC tank that we have been using for years in the shrimp farm. Do you think PVC tanks are good for long term use? If not, what can be an alternative to it? In the last 2 years of running the shrimp farm, we have been using PVC tanks. The PVC tank that we have been using is typically in blue colour. After using the PVC tank for years, one of the problems that we face when using a PVC tank is the rust. The rust occurred from the metal bars that supported the tank, and it stained the PV ..read more

HOW TO PREVENT SETTLEMENT IN THE BIOFLOC TANK
RAS Aquaculture Blog
by Fatina Athira

For those who have been actively doing biofloc, you may have encountered some issues when running your biofloc systems, which look like this. You'll discover these sediments in your tanks, and all of your shrimp and prawns will end up dead. In this post, we'll go over what are the reasons for this, as well as how to overcome it. https://youtu.be/cnSdG6T3jIw What are these settlements? You might frequently find settlements in your biofloc tank. These settlements can be organic. They are primarily floc particles that have grown in size. They tend to settle at the bottom as a result of the biofl ..read more

The Use of Protein Skimmer in RAS System
RAS Aquaculture Blog
by Fatina Athira

When you decide to start your aquatic farming journey, you may encounter a lot of terminology that you are unfamiliar with. Even if you have prior experience with freshwater aquariums, much of the equipment needed for a saltwater system is different. A protein skimmer is an excellent example. In this post, we'll look at one of the new skimmers that were recently installed in the holding tank. It's a new upgrade, and we'll go over what a skimmer is, why we install it, and where we install it in holding tank systems. https://youtu.be/wTybP-hZz50 Why do we require a protein skimmer? htt ..read more

WHICH MUD CRAB SPECIES IS MORE MEATY?
RAS Aquaculture Blog

Mud crabs are classified into four species (under the genus Scylla): Scylla Serrata, S. Tranquebarica, S. Paramamosain, and S. Olivacea. They are one of the most expensive crab species on the planet because the vast majority of their commercial output is sent to market alive. Because of its high nutritional value, rapid growth rate, and strong market demand, mud crab aquaculture has grown in popularity. https://youtu.be/wpxXsc48hEg In the video, we showed how to distinguish Scylla Olivacea and Scylla Tranquebarica based on the colour, size, shape of the frontal lobe spines, claw size, and poly ..read more
