In April, we experienced four incidents that resulted in degraded performance across GitHub services. April 05 08:11 UTC (lasting 47 minutes) On April 5, between 8:11 and 8:58 UTC, several GitHub services experienced issues. Web request error rates peaked at 6% and API request error rates peaked at 10%, and over 100,000 GitHub Actions workflows failed to start. The root cause was traced to a change in the database load balancer, which caused connection failures to multiple critical databases in one of our three data centers. We resolved the incident by rolling back the change and have implemen ..read more

Starting today, administrators using Github.com accounts can enable their repositories and/or organizations to run Dependabot updates jobs as a GitHub Actions workflow using both hosted and self-hosted runners. Running Dependabot does not count towards GitHub Actions minutes–meaning that using Dependabot continues to be free for everyone. Since its launch, Dependabot has used hosted compute to simplify the process of running update jobs, minimizing the amount of work developers need to do to stay on top of security vulnerabilities. However, this compute system wasn’t able to access some on-pre ..read more

Where does your software (really) come from?
The GitHub Blog
by Trevor Rosen

Software is a funny, profound thing: each piece of it is an invisible machine, seemingly made of magic words, designed to run on the ultimate, universal machine. It’s not alive, but it has a lifecycle. It starts out as source code—just text files, sitting in a repository somewhere—and then later (through some unique process) that source gets built into something else. A chunk of minified Javascript delivered to a web server, a container image full of framework code and business logic, a raw binary compiled for a specific processor architecture. That final stage of metamorphosis, that something ..read more
