Introducing… COLD HAUNTS BOOK CLUB! Backstory ➡️ On Instagram, I created a Nordic noir book club (#NordicNoirReadalong) in 2021 and a horror book club (#SpookyBookPals) in 2023. This year I decided to combine them to make it easier for me to manage (plus hashtags are not useful for tracking posts anymore). We’re also expanding to read more crime books besides Nordic noir! Reading plan ➡️ We read one horror book every month and one crime book every 2 months. The discussions take place at the end of the month. Members can vote for future books, and they are free to skip a book if they need to. I ..read more

Goodbye, 2024! Last year I had a few health issues including a major surgery, so I had plenty of downtime to read while I was recovering. I’m looking forward to a great reading year in 2025! Highlights of 2024 on the blog: I’ve compiled the wrap-up stats from Goodreads and Storygraph, check it out below: Horror remains my most-read genre (to no one’s surprise!), but I also ventured into other genres including mystery, crime, his ..read more

A terrifying, thoughtful collection of ten uncanny stories that explores life and death through the eyes of characters in challenging situations. Death was as present in the blank spaces of the map as it was in the creases of their house, but the reminders — a mound of earth piled on a shoulder, a broken deer, memorial crosses draped with rotting flowers — swept by in her peripheral vision, only there for an instant. She had to keep her eyes on the road. – Is There Human Kindness Still In The World? The Inconsolables is a collection of short stories that lingered long after ..read more

Five nightshift workers regularly meet at a local cemetery during their breaks: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, a former student, and a journalist. One evening, they find a freshly dug grave that wasn’t there before. They soon realise there’s a mystery to be solved — and it relates to the strange events that have been happening in the city. They met in the cemetery every night at midnight. Not on purpose, exactly, but not quite by accident either. University policy prohibited smoking within a hundred feet of any campus building, and on the west side of campus, whe ..read more

Welcome to Barrowbeck. For centuries, the residents in the remote valley on the Yorkshire-Lancashire border have navigated the challenges posed by forces beyond their understanding. They dedicate themselves to raising families, cultivating the land, and welcoming visitors seeking solace. Yet, beneath the surface, a shadow lingers, as constant and turbulent as the river that winds through the village. This was a hidden place. A place of privacy. No one had been here before. Theirs would be the first footprints. Their voices the first to resound here. The first voices of a new village. &n ..read more

Hello November! It’s officially Nordic Noir November, my annual reading challenge where I encourage readers to read and share as many Nordic Noir books as possible. Nordic noir is a subgenre of crime fiction set in one of the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, as well as Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland). It features dark and disturbing storylines in bleak, atmospheric locations. Nordic noir is a mood as much as a genre and the darkening days of fall is the perfect time to read these books! I’ve compiled a list of new and thrilling Nordic noir books for you to r ..read more
