The period between 3-6 months can be a challenging time for baby sleep. During this phase, your baby’s sleep pattern begins to resemble that of an adult, with more distinguishable periods of light and deep sleep and more varied neurological sleep cycles.   They’re also starting solids, learning to roll over, cat napping, consolidating night sleep, moving on from swaddling, and have a mature circadian rhythm. 3-6 months is a crucial time for your baby's sleep habits, and it's worth exploring what's happening during this phase.   What you can find in this article Sleep cycle developme ..read more

Sleep training as your last hope– a home consultation case study

There is reason why sleep deprivation has been historically a method of torture (1.) and there is an abundance of scientific studies that shows the correlation between sleep & mental health (2,3.). The concept of having children and how we, as parents, have to accept, that sleep becomes a “nice to have”, (because once you have children, being tired is just a given - especially for mums) is unfortunately deeply engrained in the society we live in right now: and if you prioritise your own sleep, surely your being “unrealistic & selfish”. But the impacts of not getting enough sleep & ..read more

The end of day light savings - your plan

Daylight Savings Changes Updated 2024 It is the end of summer again, which means it will soon be the end of daylight savings too and time to put the clock back an hour. The biggest concern with this shift in the clocks is early morning wakes, a 5.30am wake will now be 4.30am, unless you do something about it. Which is a lot less scary than it sounds! The good thing about this change is that you now have 1 hour longer to get your baby back to sleep in the morning, or for them to get themselves back to sleep if they're self settling.   Babies’ biological rhythms are set by 3 factors... No cry, gentle and traditional sleep training, what's the difference?

When it comes to sleep training one of the biggest discussions we have with all our clients is understanding the difference between these 3 kinds of sleep training. Why? Often, parents have some big misconceptions that need to be cleared up before we can make a good decision on what approach is best for their family. Is one way better than the other? The biggest misconception is that one way is the best way, and anything else is a compromise. If you've chosen to sleep train, the best way is the way that suits your baby's temperament, and your parenting style. I am a FIRM believer that there is ..read more

Is white noise dangerous for our babies?
Baby Sleep Consultant
by Emma Purdue

Are white noise machines safe? White noise machines, or sound machines in the United States, are a common baby sleep device. White noise machines produce a consistent sound that most people find relaxing, and in babies, these sounds aid in settling to sleep and staying asleep. Common white noise machines, such as the baby shusher, make a shhh shhh sound, and other more complex machines, such as the Sleepytot white noise machine, will have a variety of sounds, from waves to a crackling fire or a shush or rain sound. Why use white noise on your baby? Common situations that white noise can help y ..read more

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, you will no doubt have heard of the wonder weeks book or the wonder weeks app. The authors of this book (wonder weeks) compared observational studies of infant chimps to the hierarchical perceptual control theory developed by William T Powers, did further human observations and wrote the book the wonder weeks.   Wonder weeks refer to leaps in mental developmental and are hypothesised to be linked to grumpy periods or regressions.   In total there are 10 leaps over 20 months, and the wonder week authors explain that eac ..read more

6 month old addicted to her dummy

Jess Asks, my baby sleeps with her dummy… I have a 6-month-old baby who has been using a dummy since birth. Recently, we decided to take it away during the day and, after some initial fussiness, she is now able to settle herself for naps. However, I am hesitant to try this at night, as I am worried about how she will respond. She is formula-fed and receives solids three times a day. However, she isn't fed at night, and I only give her a dummy between 11pm-1am and a few times between 2-3 am. 7-730 wakes up 8am bottle with a bit of cereal afterwards.  9 am sleep, for 40min- hour  Midda ..read more

Question: Bronwyn is a mother of a 4-month old baby who hasn't yet learned to self-settle. The baby wakes up around four times each night and requires to be fed back to sleep. However, Bronwyn is unsure whether these night feeds are necessary or not, as she is confused by the information she has read. The baby stays awake for approximately 1.5 hours and is given a top-up before a nap to help him fall asleep. He usually settles down in the evening between 6:30 to 7:30 pm and has been gaining an average of 200-500 grams per week. The baby is not swaddled during naps and is provided with some wh ..read more
