In an uncertain and complex future, digital literacy and learning how to learn are fundamental to accessing opportunities for a brighter future. And we need to ensure no kid is left behind from seizing the possibilities of the future. Since 2017, Saturday Kids has managed Code in the Community (CITC) – a large-scale free multi-level coding programme for disadvantaged kids. With the help of public and private partners — including Google and Infocomm Media Development Agency (IMDA) — and over 1000 committed volunteers, we’ve reached over 3500 kids from disadvantaged families in Singapore. It takes a village to democratise digital literacy. Code in the Community – large-scale free coding programme for disadvantaged kids – is only possible because of a community of volunteers from all walks of life who give their time and talent to teach kids from under-privileged backgrounds about the world of code. Get to know some of ’em in this series – we hope their stories inspire you as much as they inspire us. Could you introduce yourself? Hi, my name is Valerie. Saturday Kids turns 10!

We never thought we’d say this… but this year, we turn 10! That may not sound like a big deal, but for a small, independent social enterprise that often feels like it’s struggling against a system, it’s a heckuva milestone. And you bet we’re not passing up a chance to celebrate it. True to our ethos – we’ve tried a lot of new things, seen a lot of changes in the education landscape in Singapore and beyond, made lots of friends, found our critics, been inspired by amazing kids, played a lot, failed a lot, and learned a lot. Here are just some highlights from our adventure so far: Starting small ..read more

No More Mid-Year Exams: A Big Step in the Right Direction
Saturday Kids
by skadmin

This just in from the Ministry of Education – by 2023, mid-year exams for all primary and secondary school levels will be removed. This is a huge step in the right direction. For me, the biggest benefit this brings about (and as pointed out by the ministry) is the curriculum time freed up for teachers and students to explore areas of interest and learn new skills. As an employer, investor and entrepreneur, it’s absolutely clear to me what matters in life is what you can do with what you know. Forget the old cliche about who you know. An old boy/girl network helps, but it’s not going to get ..read more

“The Curriculum is just the Guide” – Behind the Scenes with the Saturday Kids Product Team

As one of (now) many coding schools for kids in both Singapore and Tokyo, it can be kind of hard to explain that our aim is not to equip kids to grow up to be well-paid software engineers, but to inspire them create a better future with technology. And that means placing the child – not the curriculum – at the center of learning. Curiosity is the fuel, and joy is the outcome. Find out what that means in this conversation with Fong Yee and Damar from the Saturday Kids Product team, and stay for a sneak peek at what’s comin’ up in 2022! Hey big kids! Could you introduce yourselves and share how ..read more

CITC Fieldtrip to LionsBot: “Discovery Comes from Experiences like this”
Saturday Kids

“Discovery comes from experiences like this.” 65% of kids will work in jobs that don’t yet exist. How then do we prepare kids for and get them excited about the future of work? Code in the Community is just one way our team at Saturday Kids is equipping kids to navigate the tech-driven, VUCA future. But we also recognise that it’s not quite enough. Learning to code is an important skill – but exposure is priceless. It takes a village to bridge the opportunity gap and the digital literacy gap – that’s where partners come in. There’s nothing like hands-on learning, and experiencing something for ..read more

Pay Attention and Be Curious: What happens when Code Meets World
Saturday Kids

When we first piloted Code Meets World, we were a little nervous – but mostly excited – because it was our most ambitious product yet and the one most closely aligned with our mission to inspire kids to create a better future with technology. We knew this might not appeal commercially to most mainstream parents, and couldn’t think of any other coding schools that we know of offering anything remotely similar. And through the interdisciplinary programme, we hoped to point kids towards using tech as a tool for addressing big questions – to expand their worldview, use web-based technologies to ex ..read more
