SAHM IN THE CITY: MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS
The Sober SAHM

This museum was really fun. More fun than I expected, actually. It's a small place that you'd miss if you blinked but it's packed with goodness. It's amazing how the brain works. I'm not sure if this is a permanent museum or if it's just making a pitstop here in Chicago. Either way, it's worth a visit. You can get in and out in about an hour.  This museum was part of my plan to do something new. We've visited the "standard" museums a gazillion times. And, while we're still making our rounds to those as well, this kicked it up a notch.  Is that baby Eric? Nope! It's just an illusion ..read more

SAHM IN THE CITY: GARFIELD PARK CONSERVATORY

Listen, you don't have to be a nature lover to fall in love with the Garfield Park Conservatory. It's amazing! You'll forget that you're in the middle of a city. We didn't go to see any plant or flower. We went for the peace and serenity and beauty. There are several different rooms showcasing different categories of plants. For example, there's a fern room and a cactus room.  Here are a few pics from our trip.  I can't name any of the plants shown so don't ask! Just scroll and enjoy!  If I had a home in a warm climate, I'd plant this exact landscape. So beautiful and lush.  ..read more

There are certain things that a young lady needs to have access to at any given point in time and, unfortunately, it won't all fit into a purse. This is especially true when they're at school and away from home base. Having a few essentials on hand in case of an emergency gives them an added sense of  security while away. It's comforting to know that they can handle basic issues that pop up. As the mother of a tween and a teen, I speak from experience!  Throw these items in a bin, cute bag or whatever space will allow. Be sure to replenish or replace items as necessary.  ..read more

6 REASONS WHY MY 2020 DIDN'T SUCK
The Sober SAHM

It's funny how the year 2020, the year of perfect vision, has been the year that no one saw coming! While 2020 has been a rough year, to say the least, there were still some good worth recognizing. I feel it's important not to skirt over that. Here are 6 reasons why 2020 didn't totally suck for me.  1. My girls got to know each other better!  Despite living in the same house and not being involved in 50 million activities, they still didn't have the time then that they have now. There was school, which sucked up most of the day, then homework, dinner, bedtime...repeat. The weekends w ..read more

2020: A LOOK IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR
The Sober SAHM

I don't claim any year to "be my year". I'm also not a new-year-new-me kinda person. I am always grateful to be alive to see a new year and my plan is the same every year- to be a good person, mother, wife, friend and neighbor and to be happy.  That's it! Any other accomplishments are simply icing on the cake.  Like many people last year, I've never been more thankful for my home. While some saw their homes as a prison, I saw my home as a sanctuary. As I reflect on my 2020, it wasn't much to tell as most of it was spent quarantined, but I'm recounting it anyway.  Lots of video c ..read more

SAGE: TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN
The Sober SAHM

Sage is not just for the Thanksgiving dressing! I've heard about burning sage, also known as "smudging", for years but never tried it. However, it's always been lurking in the back of my mind. I finally decided to look into it to see what it's about. Why burn sage? The most common use today is to purify your home of all things negative. That could be a spirit you believe is hanging around, an ex you want all traces of removed or maybe you just came out of a funk and want to rid your space and yourself of bad energy. It can also be used to bless the home as well. Salvia is latin for "to heal ..read more

WHY YOU NEED A HUMIDIFIER THIS WINTER
The Sober SAHM
by

Grab yourself a humidifier this winter!  Why? Because properly humidified air reduces the life span of the flu and other respiratory viruses (do I really need to say more?!), relieves congestion, dry nose, dry skin, cough and helps you breathe better. Being hydrated from the inside isn't always enough. Keep drinking your water, though!  I can tell when the the humiditity of the late Summer/early Fall has, literally, left the building. I'm drinking plenty of water yet I'm constantly applying lip balm, my skin is dry an hour after  the shower (no matter how "moisture rich" my lo ..read more

THE HYGGE LIFESTYLE DEFINED & HOW I EMBRACE IT
The Sober SAHM

What the hell is hygge? That's the first question I had when I came across the word. That, and how do you pronounce it! Well, it's a Danish word used to encompass the feelings of comfort, coziness and well being during the winter months and it's pronounced "hue-gah". The Danish winter is long and brutal so they've mastered ways to embrace it.                                                                      &nb ..read more
