I am a specialist in the semiconductor industry – the field where we design and manufacture semiconductor devices that serve as the foundation for nearly all electronic devices. My career has been quite steady; since graduation, I’ve only worked at three different places. My first five years were at Micro Analog Systems, then I spent eighteen years at Murata Electronics, and now I have worked at Vaisala for almost four years as the Director for the Sensor Factory.  Finding my dream field through a summer job When I was younger, I never had in mind to study anything related to technology ..read more

The most valuable lesson I have learned so far is the ability to believe in my expertise: the ability to grow into calling myself an expert. When I started researching my specialization, environmental web design, there were no materials to draw from. As I researched more and more, it was hard at first to consider myself an ‘expert’. But now I fully believe that when you are interested in something and put effort into learning every detail, it is appropriate to call yourself an expert – I have learned to see myself for who I am.  I work as a UI/UX Designer at Taiste, although this is no ..read more

After a decade in the field, I can say that the advantage of working in tech is the opportunity to have varied roles. Tech studies provide you with an excellent basis to begin with, so if at some point I feel like gaining a new skill, I know the field will support me in acquiring such expertise. I was graduating high school and exploring my study options when I found technology schools. I had considered studying Veterinary, but I remember instantly changing my mind: tech sounded perfect for me! At first, I wanted to focus on ‘hard’ technology studies: I had my eyes on Biotechnology in Tampe ..read more

A key piece of learning for me has been how important it is to investigate your passion: the one that lives deep inside you. It will pay off. In my case, I’ve always considered myself geared towards the well-being of others. In my hobbies, in my studies, and in my personal life – this has been my passion. And little by little, choice by choice, it brought me to where I am now. It paid off. I work as a Service Manager at Advania, where I am responsible for the operational aspect of the consumer journey in the company. I make sure the billing side goes smoothly, or if something comes up with ..read more

I work at Schneider Electric as an IT Channel Manager, which is part of Secure Power: in practice, that means we sell our products –Data Centers products, solutions, and services– via IT distributors. I don’t have a background in Technology, so this journey has been very interesting and fulfilling for me, since I get to learn new things every day. A balanced and varied career After high school, I started studying Engineering, but I only completed one year, since I quickly realized it wasn’t my field of interest back then. I ended up turning my focus onto Marketing and Foreign Trade. I stud ..read more

In retrospect, it seems as if everything in my career has happened by accident – yet I feel that all of those coincidences have brought me to where I needed to be. Also, looking closer, I recognize that alongside luck there has been a lot of effort, since it is not usual to be in our 30s and reconsider what we wanna do career-wise –  it does take a lot of courage.  Just a few days ago I realized that I’ve been living in Finland for 15 years, and I was surprised: it’s such a long time! Actually, I am originally from Germany. I currently work at Vaisala as a Computer Vision Instruct ..read more

In the tech field, possibilities are plenty – not everything is coding! If we want to encourage more women to at least feel curious about this field, we definitely have to open up to them what the possibilities are. I work for KONE IT as the Head of Digital Enabling Platforms. I have behind me a long career that started when I moved to Finland from China in 2002; that’s 21 years ago. I came to pursue my Master’s Degree in Information Systems Science at the University of Jyväskylä, and perhaps that already was very telling of my future, since two decades later, I am still here in IT.  ..read more

It’s not at all true that IT people are just “guys in front of computers” – as many people like to understand it. But it is pretty true that in this field, many of us feel a certain insecurity when starting our careers – in that sense, finding a supportive first job is crucial. For me, especially important career step was starting as a systems specialist trainee in a tech company, where I was encouraged and trusted.  I have been working at Gofore for one year – I work as a Technical Project Manager and recently I have also started as a People Lead, and so far I ..read more
