A funded government and an update on reconciliation
AIDS United

This past week has been busy in Washington, D.C. It can often seem like the latest news on the fiscal year 2022 appropriations, the reconciliation bills or the debt ceiling is old before you can even get your eyes on it. The AIDS United Policy Team is closely monitoring what’s happening on Capitol Hill right now, what we anticipate will happen in the future — and how it all impacts HIV policy and people living with and vulnerable to HIV in the U.S. The Federal Government is funded … for now. Early on Sept. 30, the Senate passed a continuing resolution that should avoid a federal government shu ..read more

?Living for the sake of living is no longer an acceptable goal.?

Despite my best efforts, I’ve always been drawn to health and science. Growing up in a family of nurses and doctors will do that to you, I guess. But I was determined to be different. When I decided to pursue journalism instead of any STEM track like my siblings, I used it as my ticket away from math and sciences.  But, here I am: a communications intern for AIDS United, an organization focused on the health and well-being of people living with and impacted by HIV. And I’m loving it. Most of my days consist of writing and posting on social media to advocate for people living with HIV. Alt ..read more

Community Conversations is a virtual program of AIDS United’s People Organizing Positively led by and for people living with HIV. Barb Cardell, advocate and a founding member of the US PLHIV Caucus, says the idea for hosting Community Conversations came as the world started experiencing the isolating effects of COVID-19.    “We wanted to really figure out how, since we were living virtually via Zoom, we could really try and foster connections to talk about things that were important,” she said. Although people could not safely gather any more, Cardell was determined to build leaders ..read more

Bi Week: Uplifting bi+ voices and health equity

More than half of LGBTQ Americans identify as bi+, yet many continue to face stigmatization and erasure from people both in and outside of the LGBTQ community. This stigmatization leads to overwhelming health disparities in the bi+ community. Belle Silverman, president of the Bisexual Resource Center, who uses she/her pronouns, says some of this antagonization comes from our society’s obsession with the binary.  “This idea that a person can identify as someone who is attracted romantically, sexually or otherwise to a broad range of people across genders has not been a comfortable concept ..read more

“All we can do is use our voices. All we can do is use our stories. All we can do is use our lives to try to fight back,” said Evany Turk, the national field organizer for the Positive Women's Network. Residing in Texas, Turk is familiar with the frustration, stress and disappointment that can come with living in the Lone Star State.  The most recent disappointment came on Sept. 1, when the U.S. Supreme Court denied to block Texas Senate Bill 8, which bans abortion when a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually at about six weeks of gestation, and opens up the opportunity for citizens to fil ..read more

Nothing about us without ALL of us: Sex workers must be included in the new National HIV/AIDS Strategy
AIDS United

Sex workers have too often been deliberately excluded as a community of greatest need in our federal HIV response. Sex workers have been advocating for their inclusion since the first National HIV/AIDS Strategy was created in 2010, but their advocacy has thus far been met with silence. Calls for inclusion have been led by sex workers with Desiree Alliance, Best Practices Policy Project, New Jersey Red Umbrella Alliance, The Outlaw Project and The Black Sex Workers Collective since 2015. Recently these organizations have publicly resubmitted their request for the inclusion of sex workers in the ..read more

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida passing through Louisiana, can you give $50, $100 or more to AIDS United’s fund that supports HIV-related programs impacted by disasters like this one? These communities need your help. As we said in our hurricane preparedness resource: Disasters are not isolated events. They happen in the same political, historical and socioeconomic environment in which health disparities already exist. Marginalized communities are hit hardest when disaster strikes. These communities: — Are less likely to have the resources to prepare for a disaster. — Have a lower likelihood ..read more

This Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, AIDS United is proud to announce the fourth cohort of the Southern HIV Impact Fund Leadership Development Program. This initiative trains leaders in the South to respond to the unique impacts of the epidemic on the region and supports the long-term sustainability of the leaders themselves, their organizations and the HIV movement.  The South is the epicenter of the national HIV epidemic. Black communities in the South are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Responding to the epidemic must involve building the capacity of leaders in these communities ..read more
