In 2020, the Center for Inclusive Innovation, an organization fiscally sponsored by NTEN, began a research project to assess both pandemic crisis-based and longer-term efforts to mitigate digital disparities. This project documents the experiences of more than twenty organizations that attempted to adapt or improve strategies and services to address the digital divide during the pandemic as short-term, crisis-funded deployments ended. Researchers gathered information showing that those efforts resulted in tens of thousands of Portland regional residents receiving aid in digital connectivity a ..read more

While many activities and resources moved online over the past decade, the pandemic forced institutions to offer all their services digitally. The attempt elevated the public’s awareness of digital inequity. Whether trying to attend classes, apply for government benefits, or practice religion, many people were excluded from fully participating in their communities. As we experience a lifting of pandemic restrictions and move towards more offline and in-person gatherings (and less reliance on digital connection), we must maintain our commitment to making sure our communities have the access, de ..read more

The NTEN team is now fully staffed. We’re thrilled to tell you that Share Roman has joined NTEN as our first Impact Coordinator! They kindly indulged us as we played our favorite game, 5 Questions. You’re a wonderful community organizer. What are your favorite parts about and reason for being a community organizer?  I think witnessing the excitement, passion, and anger it takes to get people involved in the work that seems to not have an end date. Tech companies and vendors aren’t the only ones who build technical solutions for nonprofits. But unfortunately, the prevailing myth across the sector is that nonprofits are users of technology, not the ones designing, building, and even distributing purpose-built solutions for their teams and similar organizations. NTEN surveyed over 300 nonprofit organizations to illustrate the realities, challenges, and areas of strength for nonprofit staff and teams who are building, customizing, and otherwise supporting technology platforms for their programs and even for other organizations, with this in ..read more

As the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 was complicated for nonprofit organizations of all sizes and missions. Many organizations that had made rapid technology changes in 2020 to continue program and service delivery found that some of those changes were sustainable and others simply were not. While there were many different opinions about and efforts toward returning to in-person work in offices, the realities of our ever-changing technical needs were evident regardless of whether an organization ever had an office again. NTEN and Salesforce partnered on a survey to better underst ..read more

2021 was an eventful year at NTEN as we continued to promote, work towards, and model equitable practices internally and externally. To ensure that NTEN continues to grow in our equitable operations, part of our process is to annually review efforts made to the practices outlined in our equity commitment and identify where we can push forward or expand on those efforts in the coming year. This evaluation process involves all three equity committees, including board, community, and staff.  Our evaluation and review of 2021 have helped us identify some key successes while providing us with ..read more
