It takes a lot of hard work, commitment, and perseverance to bring about lasting personal changes. Loss teaches you that life is far too precious and fleeting to be frittered away to negativity. I’ve never been very good at New Year’s resolutions. Well, to be honest, I’ve actually always been pretty terrible at them. I’ve always had the best of intentions, but never the dedication to follow through on my ..read more

With Remembrance Day having just passed, I decided to start with the Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. This story – a love story, actually – is based on interviews with Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov, a holocaust survivor and the tattooist for Auschwitz-Birkenau. Thanks to Lale’s ability to speak multiple languages, the Nazis used him as the tattooist, tattooing the numbers on each prisoner’s arm at the camp. From this position, he witnessed life and death at Auschwitz-Birkenau and risked his life to help his fellow prisoners as best he could. Then, in 1942, he encountered a young woman, unders ..read more

Above image: On my way to Ottawa last weekend to build wreaths and bring in the bows. Last week in Petawawa, volunteers made over 2,500 bows. The volunteers included military community members and team members from the Pembroke Lumber Kings. This week I will take in another 1,000 bows. Bottom left, my maid of honour, Gillian, and I taking a break from building wreaths at Beechwood.  As I approach this weekend, the deadline for assembling the wreaths for the Wreaths Across Canada’s ceremony looms over me. It has been a crazy couple of weeks as we build the wreaths and make the bows. This S ..read more
