10 Things I Love Sunday
A Beautiful Mess

Feeling very pregnant lately—which I type with both joy and also as a complaint. I do love feeling my son wiggle around in my belly. This is the very beginning stages of getting to know him. But I’m also at the stage where it’s difficult to find a comfortable way to sit or sleep and I have to get up to pee about 4x a night. Also nothing fits, so I’m down to rotating the same five outfits, which is again both a blessing and a curse in some ways. I do love this phase of anticipation. It’s like the feeling you have before you go on a big, exciting trip. It’s excitement mixed with a little anxiety ..read more

El Presidente Cocktail
A Beautiful Mess
by Elsie Larson

The El Presidente is a famous Cuban cocktail created in the early 1900s. It’s a variation of the classic Manhattan. It was most likely named after President Mario García Menocal. During Prohibition-era Havana, Cuba became a popular vacation destination for Americans who came for the beautiful weather, beaches and of course, incredible cocktails. The Mojito and the Daiquiri are the best-known drinks from this time. The El Presidente may not be the most famous rum-based cocktail, but it is not one to miss. Watergate Salad
A Beautiful Mess
by Emma Chapman

I realize we play fast and loose with the term “salad” here in the Midwest sometimes, but this IS a classic and I stand by it! Watergate salad is a cold, dessert-type salad made with marshmallows and Cool Whip. To me, it’s a staple of any backyard BBQ or holiday dinner. I have very vivid memories of this green, creamy salad on plates beside things like Thanksgiving turkey or BBQ chicken. Don’t knock it until you try it! Some call this Watergate salad recipe by other names like Pistachio Dessert Salad or even Pistachio fluff. The name Watergate salad comes from the fact that this side dish has ..read more

While you certainly can buy pre-made Thousand Island dressing what you may not know is you probably have all the ingredients to make this classic sauce already in your kitchen. With just seven ingredients you can whip up homemade Thousand Island dressing in just a few minutes. And while I love this dressing on salads, including a classic wedge salad, there are many other uses as well! You can drizzle this over a sandwich or burger (it’s very similar to Big Mac sauce). Or use this in a cold pasta salad or quick coleslaw. Thousand Island dressing also makes a great dipping sauce for things like ..read more

Michelada
A Beautiful Mess
by Laura Gummerman

A Michelada is a savory Mexican cocktail that uses beer, lime, and spices for a drink that’s similar to a Bloody Mary but with a twist. While some may choose to serve this as a brunch cocktail, it can be enjoyed any time of day or alongside your favorite Mexican food (and preferably with a beach within view!). The origins of the drink aren’t agreed on, but it most likely goes back to the middle of the 20th century when Mexican beer started to be served with lime and salt. Taro Milk Tea
A Beautiful Mess
by Emma Chapman
1w ago
Taro milk tea is one of the most popular bubble tea drinks I usually see on menus. While of course you don’t have to add boba pearls to taro milk tea, it’s more fun if you do. This drink is a vibrant purple lavender color and made with taro root, brewed tea, and milk. What is taro? Taro is a starchy root vegetable most often grown in Southeast Asia. It’s kind of like a sweet potato or yam, but has a different flavor profile. While you can use raw taro root to make taro milk tea, I almost always use taro powder as it makes the process much easier and I think is just as good. Related: Use this ..read more
