After the 2018 NHL Draft, it would only be right for Vancouver Canucks fans to be excited about Quinn Hughes lacing up the skates this fall with 2017 first-round pick Elias Pettersson. Unfortunately, the duo taking the ice together will have to wait until at least next Spring after Hughes announced he would be returning for another season at the University of Michigan. Hughes was drafted by the Canucks with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft, and his work at Michigan as a freshman at Michigan definitely helped him to earn that spot. That’s exactly what happened to former North Dakota forward Brock Boeser. Friday night North Dakota lost in double overtime to Boston University in the first round of the West Regional. Saturday morning he signed with the Vancouver Canucks, who drafted him in the first round of the 2015 draft. The best goalies give their teams a chance to win on a nightly basis—and that’s exactly what Ryan Miller did in the late stages of his team’s recent contest against the Detroit Red Wing. Down 3-1 with just over two minutes left in the third period, the Canucks made the call to pull Miller to get the man advantage and try to even up the score. It’s pretty incredible to see how a play can unfold and be altered by one simple mistake. Last night, for Dan Hamhuis, it was his mistake that lead to an unfortunate slap shot to the face. Hamhuis took control of the puck near his own goal line in what seemed like an innocent play and the start to a Canucks break out. However, he lost control of the puck with a forechecking Derrick Brassard of the New York Rangers quickly approaching. Brandon Sutter got off to a good start with Vancouver this season. In his first season with the Canucks, he scored four goals and recorded eight assists in 16 games. But the 26-year old hasn’t seen the ice since November 10 and it could be mid-January before he returns to action after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia. The John Tortarella experiment in Vancouver certainly didn’t last long. He was ousted after one abysmal season in Vancouver, and replaced last year by Willie Desjardins. The turnaround was immediate, and Desjardins helped guide the Canucks right back into the postseason with a 48 win and 101 point campaign. Was this simply beginners luck? Offense: The Canucks definitely struggled with offense last season under the direction of Coach John Tortorella. Henrik and Daniel Sedin were the two leading scorers on the team, with Henrik scoring 50 points and Daniel scoring 47. But last season was the worst performance the Sedin Twins have given in a decade. But the Sedins were over played last season and were on the ice at all the wrong times− the penalty kill was definitely one of those times.
