The following is a guest post from Carlo Magno, a high school student in the greater Toronto area who is participating in a school internship program with Hockey World Blog. In his free time, Carlo loves watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and playing NHL 21 on PS5. After the incredible playoff run from last season in the bubble, the most disappointing team this season has to be the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks had high expectations from their hometown fans as well as fans from around the league. With great young talent like Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, and Thatcher Demko, it ..read more

After the 2018 NHL Draft, it would only be right for Vancouver Canucks fans to be excited about Quinn Hughes lacing up the skates this fall with 2017 first-round pick Elias Pettersson. Unfortunately, the duo taking the ice together will have to wait until at least next Spring after Hughes announced he would be returning for another season at the University of Michigan. Hughes was drafted by the Canucks with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft, and his work at Michigan as a freshman at Michigan definitely helped him to earn that spot. Last season, he picked up five goals and 24 assists ..read more

One day you’re a college student playing in the NCAA tournament. 24 hours later you sign an entry-level contract and you’re in the show. That’s exactly what happened to former North Dakota forward Brock Boeser. Friday night North Dakota lost in double overtime to Boston University in the first round of the West Regional. Saturday morning he signed with the Vancouver Canucks, who drafted him in the first round of the 2015 draft. How convenient the Canucks happened to have a game Saturday afternoon across the state line (and in Brock’s hometown) against the Minnesota Wild. He received a warm wel ..read more

The best goalies give their teams a chance to win on a nightly basis—and that’s exactly what Ryan Miller did in the late stages of his team’s recent contest against the Detroit Red Wing. Down 3-1 with just over two minutes left in the third period, the Canucks made the call to pull Miller to get the man advantage and try to even up the score. On his way to the bench, however, the Canucks lost possession of the puck to Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg, who carried the puck over center ice and wristed a shot toward the net. Miller saw the play unfold and quickly backtracked toward the net, ma ..read more

Dan Hamhuis Error Leads to Puck to the Face

It’s pretty incredible to see how a play can unfold and be altered by one simple mistake. Last night, for Dan Hamhuis, it was his mistake that lead to an unfortunate slap shot to the face. Hamhuis took control of the puck near his own goal line in what seemed like an innocent play and the start to a Canucks break out. However, he lost control of the puck with a forechecking Derrick Brassard of the New York Rangers quickly approaching. With Hamhuis being forced to quickly recover and try to get rid of the puck, he stumbled and turned it over to Brassard. After the turnover, Brassard s ..read more

Brandon Sutter got off to a good start with Vancouver this season. In his first season with the Canucks, he scored four goals and recorded eight assists in 16 games. But the 26-year old hasn’t seen the ice since November 10 and it could be mid-January before he returns to action after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia. The Canucks announced today that Sutter could be out 4-6 weeks. General Manager Jim Benning said “Following a period of treatment and evaluation our medical team determined that the best course of action for Brandon was to perform this procedure. The John Tortarella experiment in Vancouver certainly didn’t last long. He was ousted after one abysmal season in Vancouver, and replaced last year by Willie Desjardins. The turnaround was immediate, and Desjardins helped guide the Canucks right back into the postseason with a 48 win and 101 point campaign. Was this simply beginners luck? Or does Desjardins have what it takes to finally lead this core group to a Stanley Cup? Vancouver’s top three offensive players remain unchanged. The Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel, will primarily play alongside Radim Vrbata and do boat loads of scoring for ..read more

2014-2015 NHL Season Preview: Vancouver Canucks

Offense: The Canucks definitely struggled with offense last season under the direction of Coach John Tortorella. Henrik and Daniel Sedin were the two leading scorers on the team, with Henrik scoring 50 points and Daniel scoring 47. But last season was the worst performance the Sedin Twins have given in a decade. But the Sedins were over played last season and were on the ice at all the wrong times− the penalty kill was definitely one of those times. With Tortorella out of Vancouver, and Willie Desjardins taking over duties as head coach, the Sedin twins should be able to make a comeback this ..read more
