Dream Street Camper Recruitment Dear HSJ Family, Hello from Camp Dream Street! We are a speciality camp founded in 1975 with the mission that all children, regardless of their abilities, must be offered the chance to have fun, to make new friends, to achieve, to be accepted for who and what they are, and to learn from the challenges of group life. Both the children and the staff at Camp Dream Street benefit from the life-changing experiences the camp has to offer. Dream Street is a place where children with physical disabilities are given the chance to be children – not “special” children ..read more

Spring Kallah and My NFTY-So Journey Back in 2018, as a wide-eyed kid in 6th grade, I dipped my toes into the world of NFTY at a cool event called JYG. But when I hit the right age for NFTY events, something called COVID showed up, turning everything virtual. Finally, in March of 2022, we returned to in-person events, and boy, was I pumped! I had a blast at my first NFTY event and ran for Programming Vice President later that year and again in 2023. But what made this Kallah so incredible? Picture this: 123 teens from all over the Deep South converging for the best weekend ever. The vibes ..read more

Southern & Jewish, the ISJL’s Regional Conference Jacobs Camp is truly a home-away-from home for me. I spent sixteen amazing summers in Utica! My first summer there, I was eight years old. I didn’t miss a single summer at camp (until I went on a NFTY-Israel trip) and then returned to serve as counselor, unit head, and then as Assistant Director. I was so fortunate to have sixteen summers of the Jacobs Camp magic, and then to share the magic with my three children, who also spent many wonderful summers as campers and later as staff members.  What was it about camp that made it such ..read more

Culture of Generosity – Thank You! In Summer 2023, Jacobs Camp awarded $180,000 in financial assistance to our families. We saw record enrollment numbers with over 600 campers and staff, yet we were still able to maintain our commitment that financial need will never prevent any family from sending their child to Jacobs Camp. We could not have done this without the Jacobs Camp Community’s generous support of our Annual Campaign, and we are so grateful!  Aside from providing this needed financial assistance, this support also directly funds important facility upgrades and program enhan ..read more

Love, Joy, and Hope- How Camp Helps Bring Light in the Darkness

love, joy, and hope: how camp helps bring light in the darkness   Growing up at URJ summer camps, I had the distinct honor of having Israelis as counselors and fellow staff members. The Mishlachat, Israeli summer teams, were always so full of enthusiasm, stories to tell, and very different life experiences than their American counterparts. As I became staff, the first people I tried to befriend was the members of the Mishlachat so they wouldn’t feel alone in a new country, new state, and new Jewish culture – which varies by camp. In 2012, I was hired to be the Chalutzim unit head at J ..read more

NFTY-SO Fall Conclave Hey Jacobs Camp! I’m Ben K., the Social Action Vice President of NFTY Southern. I am happy to report that last month’s NFTY-SO Fall Conclave in New Orleans was a huge success! In conjunction with TASTY, we hosted almost 100 NFTY-SO teens from across our region. Everyone had a great time participating in the space themed programming and were so happy to have their out-of-town friends all in one place. I was most proud of our social action program where we had in-depth discussions about Israel and also made care packages full of essential items for the New Orleans Women ..read more
