Thousands of developers all over the world will take part in Google Hash Code. During the four-hour-long contest, they will solve an optimization assignment by Google in teams of two to four. They can code in almost any programming language they prefer.  It’s very prestigious to make it to the final round. And Central Europe’s talent pool is one of the best in the world – many teams from the region compete in the Final Round every year. The Slovak team from MatFyz, the Math and Physics faculty at Comenius University, even finished in the top ten.  Teams can participate remotely or jo ..read more

The Unfrozen Evolution of Money

Last month, I used my bank to make a payment. What was I thinking?  It was a particularly stressful week, so I let my guard down. For a moment, I forgot that traditional banks are not the right app for financial transactions behind the EU wall. It cost me 21.95 EUR to pay 160 USD from my supplier. It took 5 days until the U.S. counterparty received it.  Sure, the New World is on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but I wonder why a simple transaction, sent to my parents 100 kilometers away, still takes a day or two to deliver.  I pay my bank 7 EUR per month. It’s the minimum ..read more

A 3 step guide to growing your tech circle

We have a small but dedicated Vacuumlabs team located in Budapest. Our team size has more than tripled in the last year during all the lockdowns, and although we have been fully prepared for remote work even before corona times, the lack of live social interactions was a huge challenge for all of us. Suddenly, we lost one of our biggest benefits: the ability to visit our colleagues in our beautiful headquarters in Bratislava and at other offices in Prague, Kosice or Brno. We had online breakfasts, online lunches, we played online games with the Tabletop Simulator on Steam, we mastered Among Us ..read more

Building on Bitcoin, part two: Sidechains, Wrapped Bitcoin
Vacuumlabs

The Sidechain approach Sidechains are separate blockchains attached to Bitcoin’s main chain through various mechanisms. Sidechains have a protocol of their own and run on different nodes than the parent chain, but they do not issue a native token. Instead, sidechains work with a “pegged” asset, essentially a stablecoin to the parent chain’s native asset. Such stablecoin holds its value because of its redeemability for the parent chain asset. There are currently two Bitcoin sidechains: Liquid, under development by Blockstream, and RSK, under development by RSK Labs. Bitcoin sidechains. Source ..read more

For the past few years, we’ve reached out to support educational camps that enable exceptionally curious students to meet like-minded friends and solve interesting challenges. A number of our people volunteer for them as organizers or are alumni from these demanding extracurriculars. These include organizations like Trojsten, P-Mat, and the gaming-focused Hemisfera.  While their specialities differ, all of them support enthusiasm in the realms of technology, physical sciences, and mathematics. They encourage the values of curiosity, critical thinking, and community that make companies lik ..read more

Whenever we’re able, we organize company events that connect our offices and let us see our remote colleagues in person. At our last company-wide event, there were around 150 of us and this year the attendance grew to  420 attendees – new colleagues, old colleagues, and their families.  As we rapidly grow, we hold onto the underlying spirit that makes us who we are. That means finding ways to maintain the strength of our support system, so everyone can experience the welcoming atmosphere that Vacuumlabs was founded on.  We do our best to connect our offices and our colleagues’ f ..read more

Why we Love Typescript – the Power of Javascript, Plus More…

Anyone in front-end software development knows Javascript frameworks and front-end tools go in and out of fashion faster than the blink of an eye.  But something makes Typescript different from typical projects in the Javascript hype cycle. Typescript isn’t opinionated, and can co-exist nicely alongside Javascript. Which makes it far more likely to stick around for the long term. It also just happens to be an excellent language to work with. So, here’s our case for why we love Typescript, and why you should try it out, too. (Before we jump in, here’s a quick definition of Typescript: Type ..read more

Building on Bitcoin, part one: Base layer and the Lightning Network
Vacuumlabs
by Josef Tětek

In our previous article, we analyzed the layered structure of monetary instruments throughout history and explained why it makes sense also for Bitcoin to develop in this fashion. In this two-part series, we will further analyze Bitcoin from a technical/developer perspective. In the first part, we will take a look at various scaling methods and then focus on the layered approach: Bitcoin’s blockchain that serves as a foundation for the Lightning Network and the emerging networks on top of it. In the second part, we will analyze the non-layered approach in the form of sidechains and wrapped bit ..read more
