Ryan Garcia scored an upset majority decision over WBC 140 lb. titleholder Devin Haney at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York last night on DAZN PPV. In a highly anticipated match up of young stars in the sport there was some controversy in the lead up to the fight. Garcia who had previously pulled out of a fight with Javier Fortuna citing mental health issues had some unusual posts on social media and displayed some odd behavior leading up to the fight. He missed weight by three pounds and underwent an evaluation by the New York State Athletic Commission for some of his words and actions ..read more

Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou Revisited

I have decided to come out of my boxing writing hibernation to write about the controversial crossover fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou that took place on ESPN PPV last Saturday. For those who have not seen or read anything about the fight, it was a controversial decision. Fury was cut, knocked down in the third round and fortunate to come home with a decision that is raising a fuss online. I would like to precede my analysis of the fight by saying I have made predictions that turned out to be very wrong when it comes to boxing; boy was I way off on this pick. I believed going in t ..read more

One of my favorite boxing pundits and one that I have promoted on here to my fans has returned after a hiatus. I believe his last stream was in February and he has returned for a midpoint review of 2023. He also led off with some updates from his personal life and reasons behind the hiatus. If you do not want to listen to that portion skip to fifteen minutes in. Montero runs through the fights over that span plus the good and the bad of 2023 so far. Worth a listen for boxing fans ..read more

Bait and Switch: Charlo (Jermell) vs Canelo Alvarez RETRACTION POST

This poster floated around on social media yesterday and led to a lot of confusion. This also will lead to my first retraction post. In the effort to not be fake news or Russian disinformation I am setting the record straight and reporting what I am calling the “Charlo Bait and Switch”. I reported recently that Canelo signed with PBC and a fight with Jermall Charlo was set to go in September. Jermall the big Charlo twin passed and Jermell the small Charlo stepped in. Most fans reacted with confusion seeing the poster as it did not say which Charlo though most assumed it was Jermall since he w ..read more

Boxing in Media: A few Welterweight KO’s for the Fans

I am getting excited for the upcoming Terrence Crawford and Errol Spence title clash at the end of July. It got me thinking about a few nasty knockouts from the division since the beginning of the 2000’s. Here are a few KO’s I would like to share with my fellow boxing fans: Randall Bailey KO 11 over Mike Jones Randall “the Knockout-King” Bailey briefly held the IBF Welterweight Title in 2012 with this KO over the red hot rising Mike Jones who sat at 26-0. Jones was well ahead on all three scorecards when he hit the canvas in the tenth round and was dispatched in the eleventh. This was a bruta ..read more

Social media boxing circles and tabloid press have been discussing a rumored mega fight card from Saudi Arabia in December of this year. I cannot find a reputable source reporting this as signed and finalized and it feels too good to be true. However, as a fight fan this would be the best news of a year filled with many fights fans have been clamoring for. Right now the fight card is being reported as Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title, former champions Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua meeting in a long awaited match and Francis Ngannou finally crossing over int ..read more

Canelo Alvarez Signs with PBC: What to Expect?

After weeks of posturing and negotiating, Canelo Alvarez has signed a three fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions to fight on Showtime PPV. Negotiations with Dmitry Bivol and Badou Jack have fallen apart and Alvarez has since moved on. Bivol would not budge on the weight class as he wanted to come down and attempt to take Canelo’s undisputed crown at 168 lbs. and Jack would not put his cruiserweight title on the line twenty pounds below the limit and with a re-hydration clause. I will inject my opinion by stating I like this trend of fighters standing up to the A-side and not taking ridicul ..read more

Yes I know I am late to the dance. I still have not watched all twelve rounds of the Teofimo Lopez vs Josh Taylor fight and planned a quick recap of it as well. Munguia won this fight which I am aware of but have yet to watch as of my time typing. In this post I am hoping to do a full scorecard and analysis of the fight. Round 1: Munguia comes out boxing, he sticks the jab out as a constant threat. SD continues to bob and weave to evade the jab then attempts to close in. Munguia intelligently backs out of range and stays on the jab. About thirty seconds into the round and neither man has conne ..read more

Josh Taylor vs Teofimo Lopez Tonight from Madison Square Garden Josh Taylor defends his WBO 140 lb title for the first time and the fourth defense of his Ring Magazine title. Taylor had held all four of the major titles in this division but was stripped when mandatory challengers demanded their shot and Taylor pushed for his rematch with Jack Catteral. Taylor ran the gauntlet by unifying titles and defeating the best the division had to offer and was briefly seen as a threat to Terrence Crawford. In his backyard last year, Taylor was fortunate to escape with his titles following a close fight ..read more

Classic Revisited: Bernard Hopkins Stops Felix Trinidad in 12

It is always a pleasure meeting fellow boxing fans and I was pleasantly surprised to find a coworker who loves the sport like I do. He mentioned coming to the country as a young kid and being grabbed by boxing. One of his favorite fighters growing up was Bernard Hopkins who happened to also be one of my favorites for years. This talking about Hopkins reminded me of the great performances of his career and the first to come to mind was the win over Trinidad. I remember being a ten year old kid just weeks removed from the tragedy that was 9/11. So many experts and insiders were picking Trinidad ..read more
