Tools that manage changes to source code, programs, documents, or other collections of information are known by a variety of names: version control, revision control, source control, or source code management are all common descriptors. Regardless of what we call them, these systems have become increasingly vital in a world where software and data are essential commodities. Demand for version control systems Version control systems (VCS) are used to track every change to source code. They help development teams and others manage these changes over time. As market pressures accel ..read more

Microsoft has announced the MSTest SDK. Built on the MSBuild Project SDK system and based on the MSTest runner, the MSTest SDK is designed to give developers a better experience for testing with MSTest, Microsoft’s framework for unit testing. The MSTest SDK, announced April 11, makes project configuration easier via sensible defaults and flexible options, Microsoft said. To use the MSTest SDK, developers must create an MSTest project, or update an existing MSTest project, and replace the content of the .csproj file. Kubernetes plays an important role at Microsoft. The container management system is a foundational piece of the company’s many clouds, from Microsoft 365 and Xbox, to Azure, to partners like OpenAI that use Microsoft’s Kubernetes to host their own services. As a result, Microsoft has invented many of its own Kubernetes management tools. These include Kaito for deploying AI inferencing workloads and Fleet for large-scale management of Kubernetes clusters. All of Microsoft’s various tools sit underneath its two managed Kubernetes services, Azure Kubernetes Service and Azure Container Service, al ..read more

Open source is not insecure

Frank Crane wasn’t talking about open source when he famously said, “You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you don’t trust enough.” But that’s a great way to summarize today’s gap between how open source is actually being consumed, versus the zero trust patterns that enterprises are trying to codify into their DevSecOps practices. Every study I see suggests that between 90% and 98% of the world’s software is open source. We’re all taking code written by other people—standing on the shoulders of giants—and building and modifying all that code, impl ..read more
