Reflections on Genesis 21:1-3; 22:1-14
What sort of God would test a man by asking him to sacrifice a child on a mountain? One not worth following, that’s for sure.
I believe that Jesus is God (I’m of the Christian trinitarian persuasion) and can you ever imagine Jesus testing a man by telling him to go sacrifice his kid on a mountain? That sounds more like Satan than it does Jesus.
So what’s up with the Abraham, Isaac, and God story in Genesis 22? Isn’t that what we’ve been told about this story? That God wanted to test Abraham’s devotion by telling him to sacrifice Is ..read more

A Retelling of the Good Samaritan
Jesus was gathered with a crowd of people when suddenly an expert in religious law decided to stand up and test him. Jesus tells the man that loving God and loving your neighbor are the most important of God’s laws but the expert wanted to know who qualified as his neighbor. Jesus told a story about a man left for dead, and how someone most hated was the one to stop and rescue the man. Jesus answered the expert’s question by teaching th ..read more

Some of the most tragic words you will ever hear in life are, “They lost their son.” Or, “They lost their daughter.” Having officiated the funerals of a 29 year old son, a 20 year old son, and an infant son, I can tell you there are no words that bring comfort. There is nothing that eases that pain. There’s just deep aching sorrow.
And we find these words penned down in Luke cha ..read more

A Retelling of the Shepherds Visit
In the stillness of the night, an Angel of the Lord appears to some shepherds, to people who’ve been a symbol of what God has always been doing in the world, keeping watch by night. And in this darkness, light had entered the world, and here was God, celebrating and declaring and proclaiming this light over the people.
And this angel of the Lord tells the shepherds, fear not, I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all peo ..read more

In a no name town, a town with no significance at all, the town of Nazareth, an Angel of the Lord Gabriel appears to a young a woman, Mary a bride-to-be, with nothing significant to offer either. There was absolutely nothing significant or special about the people that God was going to use for the in breaking of Jesus into this world. Joseph was just another member in the family line of David, Mary was just a small-town gir ..read more
