Button batteries are incredibly dangerous! Why are they so dangerous? But batteries are dangerous because if swallowed, they could become stuck in the esophagus. Once they become stuck, they immediately are activated in begin burning the esophagus. The type of burn from button batteries is an alkaline burn because water is hydrolyzed to a hydroxyl anion. "Let it Breathe" is a wound care myth! When wounds are left to dry out a scab forms, a build up of exudate and blood excreted by the wound that hardens and creates a barrier to healing. What we want is a moist environment for wound healing and an appropriate dressing that manages the exudate. What are the most common myths about wound healing? Can I BUST them? As a surgeon I make wounds and I take care of wounds. I need to be a wound expert. Over the years I've learned a lot about wound care and I discovered that I believed a few of these myths. When I was a trainee I knew that BRCA mutations led to an increase in breast cancer but I had no idea there were so many other cancers.
