In 1999, the U.S. women’s soccer team captivated sports fans across the globe when it won the World Cup and became the first team in the female league to do so on home soil. The championship title was a pivotal moment for women’s sports that inspired a generation of young girls, among them Miranda Spencer and Annie Weaver. “I remember the 1999 World Cup and the Fab Five and the rest of that group, the ’99ers,” said Weaver, who was 5 years old then. “That was the first time it was broadcast live and people were seeing women being extremely successful in a professional sport. Lakers’ LeBron James lashes out at replay officials after buzzer-beater loss to Nuggets: “What are we doing?”

The Los Angeles Lakers blew a 20-point third-quarter lead and watched helplessly as Jamal Murray drilled a 15-foot step-back jumper at the buzzer to lose a heartbreaking game to the Nuggets on Monday night. But after a devastating 101-99 loss that stuck the Lakers in a 2-0 playoff hole, NBA icon LeBron James didn’t lament his long-distance miss with 16 seconds left. He didn’t examine why L.A. blew its enormous lead or why the Nuggets made seven consecutive shots down the stretch. Nope. James went off on the officiating. More specifically, James raged against the NBA’s replay system. The call t ..read more

The Nuggets, who entered the fourth quarter Monday trailing the Lakers by 10, mounted a strong late comeback to beat Los Angeles, 101-99, to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round series. The drive was capped off by Jamal Murray, who nailed a fade-away jumper over Anthony Davis at the buzzer. WHAT A BUCKET. Quick hits from the Nuggets’ Game 2 victory over the Lakers on Tuesday night at Ball Arena in the Western Conference playoffs. 1. Little help, please!: The Nuggets suffered an In-N-Out first quarter for the second straight game. Nikola Jokic had a double-double all by himself — 10 points and 10 rebounds. With a little help from his friends, Jokic would have also had a mess of assists in the opening 12 minutes. He dished off for several wide-open looks, but the Nuggets were the gang that couldn’t shoot straight. So the Joker was limited to one assist. The Nuggets made just 9 of 25 shots and tra ..read more

They were solved at last, an impossible puzzle that had somehow eluded the Lakers’ best mental and physical efforts for more than a year, for nine in a row of these increasingly familiar meetings. Jamal Murray (27) of the Denver Nuggets knocks down the game-winning shot over Anthony Davis (3) of the Los Angeles Lakers during the fourth quarter of the Nuggets’ 101-99 win at Ball Arena in Denver on Monday, April 22, 2024. Rockies dominated by Dylan Cease in series-opening loss to Padres, become first team since 1931 Reds to trail in first 23 games of season

With a 3-1 defeat to the Padres in the series opener on Monday at Coors Field, the Rockies made some bad company. Colorado became the first team to trail in each of its first 23 games of the season since the Reds did so in 1931. Cincinnati finished in last place in the National League that year, and Colorado appears destined for the same fate. And so it goes for the Rockies, who extended their franchise-worst start to 5-18 on a night where Padres right-hander Dylan Cease was nearly unhittable as the Colorado offense sputtered again. As Austin Gomber ran his pitch count up through the first few ..read more

For Broncos fans, new uniforms means start of a new era: “It’s time”

Gregg Parrott didn’t waste any time. With a gift card in hand, the 36-year-old walked through the double-doors of the Broncos’ team store at Empower Field at Mile High, spotted Pat Surtain II’s version of the new navy blue uniforms unveiled on Monday morning, and immediately went to the cash register. Soon after purchasing the jersey, Parrott put it on and walked around with pride. For the Milliken resident, the Broncos’ new jerseys are more than just a modern update of the last uniform design that came out in 1997. He and many Broncos fans who visited the team store, looking to get a gli ..read more

Keeler: Broncos landing Zach Wilson at QB? Smart. Settling on Wilson if Bo Nix, Michael Penix are available? Dumb
The Denver Post » Sports News

Rescuing Zach Wilson is smart. Stopping at Zach Wilson is hubris. As a quarterback, Wilson’s merely appetizer material. If the NFL Draft is still serving Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr. as a main course, and at a reasonable cost, the Broncos would be crazy not to bite. A QB room consisting of Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, Ben DiNucci and a seventh-round flier to be named late would be the worst in the division (pending Raiderfoonery ). And arguably the worst in an AFC that’s still loaded with franchise signal-callers. In isolation, though, you get it. Landing Wilson from the Jets with a seventh-round p ..read more

Inside Broncos draft meetings: Sean Payton and George Paton explore multiple ways to evaluate players
The Denver Post » Sports News

In George Paton’s 24 years of working in the NFL, he has rarely seen conflict on draft night. Even though the Broncos general manager’s draft philosophy differs from that of head coach Sean Payton, the goal is to avoid tension inside the draft room at the team’s facility by taking care of the hard work well in advance. When it’s time for the Broncos to make their first selection in the first round since 2021, their draft board has been set, and every possible scenario for each round laid out. But to get to that point has required countless hours in meeting rooms and many miles traveled across ..read more

WINNIPEG — Casey Mittelstadt is a pretty low-key guy, but he couldn’t contain his excitement. Finally, in his seventh season as a full-time professional hockey player, it was time to find out what the Stanley Cup Playoffs were all about. And it would be hard to say that Mittelstadt did anything but pass his first postseason test with a strong effort. “I think with the energy and the atmosphere overall, I don’t know if I’ve played in a game like that in my career to be honest,” Mittelstadt said. “I loved it, though, I loved every second of it. Definitely excited for more.” When this season bega ..read more
