Perhaps you've heard of CES in Las Vegas, but halfway around the world, in Berlin, Germany, there's another tech trade show with lots to see. "This is actually the 99th year of IFA Berlin," said Oliver Merlin, managing director for this year's show. Show organizers brought me to Berlin to experience IFA's rich mix of history and cutting-edge innovation. "IFA is Berlin and Berlin is IFA," said Merlin. The show is sprawling: 130,000 square meters to see spread across 26 different halls. It's almost tricky to describe. Think the biggest Best Buy you've ever seen, mixed with somewhat of a carniva ..read more

Nissan's all-electric SUV is stylish and practical

There are so many new options when it comes to EV's, but not all of them come from a manufacturer with this much experience in electric batteries. Recently, I've been test driving the 2023 Nissan Ariya, an all-electric crossover that I wasn't even aware existed until I started researching the latest Nissan Leaf. Now that I've discovered the Ariya, I'm surprised I didn't notice it sooner on city streets. Perhaps that'd due to its resemblance of the Rogue. But Ariya kicks it up a notch with slick, futuristic styling both inside and out. Nissan has been making electric vehicles for over a decade ..read more

One of the biggest reasons people don’t buy electric cars is because they’re worried about where they’ll charge them. One company has a unique answer with a solar charger that fits into a standard parking spot. San Diego based Beam Global has a solution for putting more chargers in more places. It's called the EV ARC. "Electric vehicle autonomous renewable charger. So, underline that word autonomous. This thing's not connected to anything at all. No grid connection, no power coming from the utility," said Beam Global CEO Desmond Wheatley. Beam Global CEO Desmond Wheatley The self-contained, s ..read more

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is multiple devices in one - a phone and a tablet. But if you want to join the flip side, it's not going to be cheap, and there are some compromises. It's hard not to appreciate what Samsung is doing with the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Closed, it has a narrow 6.2-inch screen. Open, it's a small tablet with a 7.6-inch screen. This year, the big improvement is in the hinge - it closes shut without a gap. The hinge feels secure at various angles and closes shut with a reassuring snap. Still, this phone is heavier and bulkier than your typical smartphone. You'll probably also wan ..read more

It's back to school season, which means you might be looking for a new laptop. While tablets are great, laptops offer more power and productivity for getting work done. Recently, I spoke with Wirecutter laptop expert Kimber Streams on the Rich on Tech radio show to get their top recommendations for budget laptops and Chromebooks under $1,000. "Right now, a lot of manufacturers are actually discounting models and having sales because they have excess inventory after so many people bought laptops during the pandemic and they aren't buying them right now," said Streams, who has been reviewing lap ..read more
