Q. Which one of the following is considered a noble grape? A. There is no official list of noble grape varieties, but these are the grapes that are most recognizable for the top quality wine they produce, as well as (usually) being internationally grown and thus with the potential to be beautifully expressed throughout the world. The six classic varieties that are considered noble are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. Cabernet the Great is certainly royal, as is any Princess’s Pinot Noir—and along with the above, by royal decree, there you have ..read more

Q&A: What (or who) is the remueur?

Q. What (or who) is the remueur? A. It’s no secret that in traditional Champagne production methods, a remueur would manually riddle, or rotate, the bottles of wine to ensure the sediment slowly cascades towards the neck of the bottle. Remueurs have mostly been replaced with gyropalettes, which are machines that mechanize this process. The remueur might be difficult to say—rhem-yur, roughly—but you’ll probably have an even harder time saying it with a bad head cold. Fleetwood Mac does not sing about remueurs, and if you try to pass along the message playing “telephone,” we bet no one would get ..read more

Q. What are the different levels of wine aromas a wine can have? A. A wine’s aromas will fall under one of three categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary flavors. Primary flavors come from the grape (fruity and floral), secondary from winemaking practices (such as oak influences), and tertiary from aging. All wines have primary aromas, which will be herbal or fruity; think of them as the aromas you’d find in nature. Secondary aromas may or may not be present, because some wines are made without additional oak aging, malolactic fermentation, or other winemaking interventions. These can be a ..read more

Q&A: What is a pét-nat?

by Wine365 Staff
1y ago
Q. What is a pét-nat? A. Pét-nat is short for Pétillant-Naturel and refers to sparkling wines made by the ancestral method. The ancestral method is a type of fermentation that begins in an open tank and then finished in the bottle with no secondary fermentation, unlike most other sparkling wines such as Champagne and Prosecco. This gives pét-nats half the pressure of classic sparkling wines. We’re not sure anyone has pet gnats, and it is not recommended to feed your pets a pét-nat, either (they do make “wine” for your favorite furry friend, though!). If you haven’t tried a pét-nat, you should ..read more
