The ADHD Winter Holidays Survival Guide: Part 1
Glitter Brain

I love everything about every winter holiday, even if I don’t celebrate all of them. I love lights, glitter everything (obviously), all-velvet party outfits, sweet treats, hot liquids, being kind to each other, cheerfulness, and general frivolity. All of these are things I associate with the winter holiday season – which to me includes Thanksgiving! But at this time of year, life can be tricky as well. I am easily overwhelmed by the number of events and activities I want to attend. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) kicks in and it can last weeks until I realize I’m depressed. It’s expensive to ..read more

Asking For Accommodations at Work
Glitter Brain

ADHD can make the basic skills required to master your job difficult. But you don’t have to sink under the weight of expectations you can’t meet. In many situations, companies are willing (and may be legally obligated) to provide accommodations. Asking for these accommodations can be a scary and difficult process, especially if you don’t feel particularly supported by your management team. But there are steps you can take to minimize your stress during the conversation. For this post, it’s important to keep in mind that ADHD is a disability. For most people it is a debilitating condition that ..read more

Supporting Your Adult Child with ADHD

The vast majority of ADHD content on supporting your children focuses on young kids and teenagers. But being a parent doesn’t stop the moment your child turns 18. They will continue to need your love and support well into adulthood. ADHD also doesn’t stop the moment a person turns 18. Most people with ADHD as children will continue to have ADHD their entire lives. The manifestations don’t go away as we age (if anything, studies show they get worse). We can only learn new tools and strategies to manage them. Parenting an adult child with ADHD may not require quite as much time and dedication, b ..read more

How Stress Affects Us
Glitter Brain

I’ve always been a stress magnet. I tend toward wanting to be responsible for a lot at once. I also don’t like to say no, so I take on many things at the same time and it never ends well (still trying to learn that lesson). These things have been especially true in my work life. At most of the jobs I’ve ever had in my life, I’ve said “yes” to too much, or picked up responsibilities dropped by other people, or put immense pressure on myself to perform at my peak at all times. I’ve also had a difficult time leaving work at work – I used to come home and ruminate on all the things I’d done wrong ..read more

Where to Make Neurodiverse Friends Online

Neurodiverse friends are great. I’ve talked before about how they can make you feel less lonely, how they can help you tackle perfectionism, and how spending time with them can help you work on living toward more neurodivergent standards. But not all of us know neurodiverse people. Well, we all do technically, because neurodiverse people make up a significant portion of the population. However, we may not realize that we already know them because not everyone is aware of their neurodiversities and not everyone is comfortable talking about them in all settings. So, what’s your alternative optio ..read more

Interval Cleaning

This is going to be short. Maybe my shortest post to date. It’s all about interval cleaning, which is a really basic concept but will help you tidy your home more often without realizing you’re even doing it. I’ve been practicing interval cleaning for years. You might be doing it too, without even knowing. I’ve only put a name to it for the purpose of this post but I’m glad I have something to call it now! What’s the Deal with ADHDers and Cleaning? Most of the ADHDers I know are a little obsessed with cleaning. They think about it constantly – I have to clean this and that, the house isn’t rea ..read more

Tackling Perfectionism

In case you haven’t been there yet, check out the first post in this series on ADHD and Perfectionism. There I talk about some reasons that many people with ADHD might become perfectionists, and what that looks like. But if you already know you’re a perfectionist and you want to work on it, you’ve come to the right place! I understand perfectionism. I have experienced my share of it, and I used to think it was a really good thing that made me a high achiever and a successful person. In some cases, it is! But the truth is that perfectionism can be taken too far and can become dangerous to your ..read more

Back again with more tips, this time about ADHD and cooking, and Twitter did not disappoint… Prep Before You Start Do *all* the prep first – this takes longer, but I find it so much more stressful when I'm trying to get things ready to add to a dish as it is cooking. — Geraint Evans (@GeraintWorks) May 3, 2021 Plan Ahead I plan ahead for the week. The part is struggle with the most is to figure out what to cook every day, so on Sundays I sit down and make a meal plan for the week to come to remove that burden from every day. Now there's "just" the task of going food shopping and actually ..read more

Resource: Women & ADHD Podcast

Maybe I’m biased because I was featured in an episode, but the Women & ADHD podcast is one of my favorite neurodiverse podcast resources out there! Hosted by Katy Weber, an ADHD advocate and holistic health coach, each episode features an interview with a fabulous woman who has ADHD. Though the episodes are interviews, they feel like cozy chats with great friends just trying to share more about their lives. It’s an opportunity to learn firsthand what ADHD is really like from the people who live with it every day. The podcast has featured women from all walks of life – business owners, pers ..read more
