Ask Sam: What Causes That Line-Dried Freshness Smell?

Every other Friday on Morning Edition, the Outside/In team answers a question from a listener about the natural world. This week, Jeff from Northwood asks: “What makes laundry smell nice and fresh when you hang it out to dry?” Editor's Note: This edition of Ask Sam first aired in June, 2019. This is an appropriate question to come from New Hampshire, given the state’s ties to the so-called “Right to Dry” campaign, which pushed back against condo associations that prohibited clothes lines because of the impropriety of seeing someone’s skivvies out on the line. But where does that wonderful line ..read more

On May 21, 2021, Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away from COVID-19 at the age of 94. His passing didn’t make the news in any of the major outlets in the US. But it got extensive coverage in India. Bahugana was the most well-known leader of the Chipko movement in India, an anti-deforestation movement in the Indian Himalayas in the 1970s. Most of the Chipko activists were rural, poor, mostly illiterate women, living subsistence livelihoods. They took on a powerful government forestry department that was increasingly in bed with big private companies and won. The movement is named for an infamous acti ..read more

One day, after a hike up Mt. Lafayette, David Baril posted a photograph to a Facebook hikin group. It seemed pretty benign: just a photograph of an engraved stone he’d found on the summit. But to his surprise, it sparked an internet flame war and raised questions about environmental ethics, aesthetics, and the wilderness of principles of Leave No Trace ..read more

Ask Sam: Why Do All Wind Turbines Look The Same?

Every other Friday on Morning Edition, the Outside/In team tackles a question from a listener. David from Mont Vernon asks: “How come all wind turbines — onshore and offshore — look the same? They all have three blades. And I’ve certainly seen designs for ones that look like egg-beaters and things that vibrate and all that kind of stuff and I just want to know why are they so boring and unimaginative in their design?” This question is extra pertinent because yesterday on Outside/In we launched a special 5-part series on offshore wind , because we are poised to see a boom in that industry. The ..read more
