Review: Su San Is Captivating On ‘IN MY HEAD’
Turntable Thoughts

In an era of music where lyrics have become much more literal, it’s refreshing to hear a homegrown artist buck that trend. Su San’s ‘IN MY HEAD’ was born out of her mental health struggles during the pandemic lockdowns – but it’s hard to tell if the song is a cry for help or a self-destructive declaration.  One thing I do know is that ‘IN MY HEAD’ is hauntingly beautiful.  Self-produced, the track is a crescendo of brooding piano keys, eerie chanting, and a gorgeous performance from Su San herself. “Before the sun dawns, I must/Put on my shoes, and cut off my toes,” she sings in the ..read more

Watch the article on TikTok @jenericjensen #stitch with @MARDIANA Malaysia already has a history of banning concerts when it threatens religious values (see: Kedah), so Matty Healy’s selfish antics might have given local authorities more bullets in the chamber to push their bullshit agenda. #the1975 #gvf2023 #goodvibesfestival #goodvibesfestival2023 #concert ♬ original sound – Jensen | Music Journalist Matty Healy had all the right in the world to be an ally for Malaysia’s LGBTQ+ community but the stunt he pulled at Good Vibes Festival? No K-Pop Group Is Doing Marketing Better Than NewJeans Right Now

Watch the article on TikTok @jenericjensen No other K-Pop group is doing marketing as well as NewJeans right now. #tiktoksg #kpop #newjeans #newjeans_coolwithyou #newjeans_omg #musictok #musicmarketing ♬ original sound – Jensen | Music Journalist NewJeans is killing it at appealing to global audiences right now. K-Pop has long seen the West as a necessary step to global domination, but no other group has been able to do it as seamlessly as NewJeans does without sacrificing their Korean roots. The Hybe girl group just dropped their music videos for ‘Cool With You’ and ‘Get Up’ that feature c ..read more

The Best Japanese Albums Of 2022 So Far
Turntable Thoughts
by Jensen Ooi

Turntable Thoughts actually got its first big break when I wrote about the best Japanese albums of 2018 to Jan 2019. Since then, the blog has gone on to cover a plethora of genres, artists and even anime. So for my first article back after a 3-month hiatus, I figure it’s only right that I go back to basics – and shine a light on the very best albums that Japan had to offer in 2022 (in my humble opinion). You’ll also find out about my overwhelming love for female vocalists too lmao. Notable Mention: milet – Visions milet as an artist feels like an outlet for her label to churn hit songs out of ..read more

Japan’s milet has ‘Visions’ For Commercial Success And Not Much Else

When I reviewed her single “Wake Me Up” a few weeks back, I believed that milet’s strength lies in her ability to craft powerful ballads that can jam-pack stadiums with an overabundance of vigour and conviction. On her sophomore album Visions, she further makes her case as a captivating songstress when her material allows it. However, it also hammers home the fact that milet excels at delivering engrossing singles but oversaturates her projects with too much of a good thing. Since her debut in 2019, she’s been working tirelessly by putting out 7 EPs and 2 albums to date – each of them packed ..read more

Review: ‘Billions’ Is Caroline Polachek’s Best Song To Date
Turntable Thoughts
by Jensen Ooi

Reviewing Caroline Polachek feels like I’m trying to unravel an enigma. I adore her music – from the way she makes liberal use of her head voice, to the sometimes inexplicable lyrics, to the ethereal persona she exudes. Caroline’s solo career was born into the world with a fully realised aesthetic and sound that no other pop star today comes close to. Her debut album Pang is an endlessly brilliant piece of work that explored the minute moments of the births and ends in a relationship, while her first single after – “Bunny Is A Rider”, was a departure from her usual other-worldly sound in favou ..read more

Another week of an avalanche of music, and another week of reviews where I talk about the music that caught my attention. This time around, I’m only talking about singles because Chinese New Year is next week and family bonding comes first (cause listening to albums is surprisingly time-consuming). So, without further ado, let’s goooooo. Benny The Butcher – “Johnny P’s Caddy” (feat. J Cole) Genre: Rap You know a Benny The Butcher track is about to be great when the soulful sample behind the gritty boom-bap production starts to slowly creep and nests itself in your brain with its catchy repeti ..read more

Review: Charli XCX’s ‘Beg For You’ Succeeds As A Cover But Fails As A Single

Rina Sawayama is my favourite artist of all time and Charli XCX’s how i’m feeling now continues to show me how great she is at crafting infectious melodies, so an official collaboration between the two has me somewhat excited. Unsurprisingly, I had to review it and I’m glad to say that “Beg For You” is a great song!…even if I came out of it still slightly underwhelmed. The single samples the mid-’00s dance hit “Cry For You” by September, which is a fantastic track with its thumping Eurobeat production that doesn’t overextend its purpose of being a fun dance number, that’s designed to get butt ..read more
