A few articles ago, we took a look at some of the downsides to being a car enthusiast in the UK, but now we’re back to talk about the positives that we all tend to gloss over. There’s plenty more we could include on this list but to save you from an hour’s read, we’ve narrowed it down to 7 reasons why being a car enthusiast in the UK isn't so bad after all. Modifications Yes yes we know, your cousin John’s pet fish’s Uncle got pulled over for having no rear bumper or doors but just try to forget about that for a moment. Compared to the likes of Germany, car enthusiasts in the UK have an incred ..read more

The Drivers Den

With Covid-19 putting a hold on most car activities and events, it’s been a good time to fall back on some of our other hobbies. We thought we’d make a list of common hobbies that other car enthusiasts may share, some of which you’ll likely partake in yourself! Photo/ Video No matter whether you’re a photographer or videographer, you’ll always need a subject, and cars provide one of the greatest subjects you could want, so it’s pretty clear why many of us also tinker with cameras on the side. You don’t always have to be a pro with all of the gear either, most car enthusiasts just like snapping ..read more

We don’t want to curse it, but there’s another ray of light at the end of the tunnel for car enthusiasts, with the potential of finally being able to have a car show season this summer. With this in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some of our favourite parts about car shows! The Convoy Picture these scenes: it’s 6 AM, you’ve just started your obnoxiously loud car on a Saturday morning and you’re on your way to a petrol station to meet up with the rest of your friends. You fill up with petrol, grab some snacks and head out on the road for a 4-hour journey to a car show, bliss. Mobbing down ..read more

“Dangerous” cars are more fun

Now before we dive into this short article, we’d like to remind you that we’re not referring to unroadworthy Mad Max-style vehicles here. What we’re actually trying to suggest here is that raw, manual, predominantly rear-wheel-drive cars, whilst technically more dangerous, provide one epic driving experience. Perhaps “thrilling” would be a more accurate word to describe it, but there’s a certain sensation setting out in a car that is more suited to providing a driving experience than comfort or safety. Take my mate Louis’s Eunos Roadster for example; it’s rear-wheel drive, manual, has no airb ..read more

In tribute to his late friend and former teammate, Gordon Murray has chosen to celebrate the 3-time world champion’s birthday with the announcement of the 725bhp GMA T50s ‘Niki Lauda’. Now, we’re pretty used to people being commemorated by things like an engraved park bench, a building, or perhaps a statue, but this tops the list by a long shot… Powered by a custom 3.9-litre Cosworth V12 engine that sings all the way up to 12,100RPM and having a mind-blowing weight of just 852KG, the T50s Niki Lauda is set to offer the ultimate driving experience. GMA insists that the car has been designed pu ..read more

Downsides to being a car enthusiast in the UK
The Drivers Den

Whilst the UK is certainly not the worst place in the world to be into cars, there are still quite a few downsides to being a car enthusiast in this country. We’ll be doing a “top positives” article to rebut this one in the near future, but for now, let’s have a look at 6 reasons why being a car enthusiast in the land of grey skies can be rather disappointing. Insurance Ah yes, the joy of beginning your driving lessons around an industrial estate in a soulless instructor’s car, with a total stranger sat next to you. Brimming with excitement, you take a look on Gumtree and pick out the perfect ..read more

Does VTEC live up to expectations?
The Drivers Den

You know in Fast and Furious when characters hit the NOS button and instantly hit light speed? Well VTEC’s nothing really like that, I just fancied an interesting hook. Since its introduction in the late ’80s, Honda’s signature variable valve timing has been highly regarded as one of the greatest and most iconic systems ever fitted to an engine. It’s also been the butt of quite a few jokes and memes, so I thought I’d share my two cents on whether or not VTEC deserves the hype or hate. Although variable valve timing is nothing particularly unique in the automotive world, VTEC (Variable Valve T ..read more

What Makes a Car Cool?
The Drivers Den

There’s plenty of cars on the roads, but only a select few are what most enthusiasts would consider “cool”, but what actually makes a car cool? Owner: @nikki370z Rarity Cars are often rated based on rarity and how obtainable they are. Here in the UK, we rarely see American imports so when a Corvette Stingray showed up to a car meet I went to, I stood around it and looked at it for a good 25 minutes. There’s just something so exciting about encountering a rare car, almost like seeing a Unicorn in the wild… if Unicorns were cool or real. A car doesn't necessarily have to be one of a small handf ..read more

The Drivers Den

Time attack; (noun) A globally recognized form of motorsport in which mental cars with insane aero packages get hammered round tracks by drivers with huge cojones, in an attempt to set the quickest lap time. There’s no other way to say it, Time Attack is just wicked. Teams take road cars, often Japanese, tune the absolute hell out of them, and push them to their limits with no fear. Originally coined in Japan during the ’60s, Time Attack follows an extremely simple format making it very exciting and a brilliant spectator sport. Cars are split into classes similar to other motorsport events ..read more
