The California Garlic Festival Is Moving Again, This Time to Los Banos

The festival formerly known as the Gilroy Garlic Festival, which became the California Garlic Festival and moved to the Central Valley two years ago, is moving once again. The four-decade-old Gilroy Garlic Festival had become a popular tourist draw to the town of Gilroy, which dubbed itself the Garlic Capital of the World. But a tragic 2019 mass shooting, combined with some financial troubles and onerous insurance requirements that followed that shooting, meant that the festival's longtime organizers had to call the whole thing off in 2022. It may be somewhat appropriate that, given that the ..read more

Chef Matt Horn is moving his Horn Barbecue operation into the restaurant space he opened last year as Matty's Old Fashioned, and while some Matty's menu items will carry over, Matty's Old Fashioned is no more. After a possible arson fire and repeated vandalism hit the original Horn Barbecue location in West Oakland, chef-owner Matt Horn announced in March that he would not be reopening his popular barbecue restaurant in that space. Fast-forward a little over a month, and Horn lets us know that he's instead going to take over the Matty's Old Fashioned space at 464 8th Street to be the new perm ..read more

A 3 am Sunday morning hit-and-run near Market and Guerrero streets has left a man in critical condition, and we now learn that man is Bob’s Donuts employee Jesus Zamudio, who is reportedly still unresponsive. The topic of the 64-year-old donut shop Bob’s Donuts came up at Tuesday’s SF Board of Supervisors meeting, in a conversation about a Legacy Business application for their Polk Street shop, and a current lease renewal dispute with their landlord. But the conversation took an unexpected and tragic turn. While discussing Bob’s Donuts, Supervisor Aaron Peskin said he wanted to “to extend our ..read more

In what the owner hopes is the first of many locations across the country, Toast'N Egg is about to debut at Irving Street and 20th Avenue, serving variations on the popular egg-filled Korean street toasts known as gilgeori. "I learned how to make eggs when I was really young," says restaurateur Cyrus Shen, speaking to Eater. "I would add different sauces or seasonings onto the eggs to change up the flavors. When I think back to eating egg toasts, it deeply reminds me of my childhood." Street toasts are also a strong childhood memory for many South Koreans, who would eat the egg and griddle-fr ..read more

Famous Rotating Turntable Bar Atop SF's Hyatt Regency to Reopen

The word "iconic" gets way overused these days — if every other thing is "iconic," what does the word even mean anymore? But I think I can safely say the rotating former Equinox restaurant and bar atop downtown SF's Hyatt Regency, which is about to turn 51 years old, is an iconic piece of the city's hospitality history, and the hotel is bringing it back. The revolving (or rotating, if you prefer) restaurant has stood still since 2007, when the turntable ground to a halt for the last time during one of the hotel's transitions in ownership. The circular space with 360 degree views of the city a ..read more

Update: Mission District’s Beauty Bar Has Closed Permanently, Was Reportedly Sold

They’ve polished their last nail and served their last shot at the Mission and 19th street kitsch nightclub Beauty Bar, which apparently closed and laid off all staff over the weekend following a reported sale. The sparkly faux glam of the Mission District’s Beauty Bar was actually born in Manhattan, as the place was a small-ish chain that eventually had locations in Los Angeles and Dallas. But Beauty Bar did not feel like a chain, bringing a splash of technicolor kitsch to a fairly grim corner, with vintage hair dryer chairs and a hairdressers’ station, its notoriously tiny but packed dance ..read more

In Another Sign of Life Downtown, Michelin-Starred Chef From Baumé Is Opening a New French Brasserie

French-born chef Bruno Chemel is making a return to the San Francisco restaurant scene after two decades, and he'll be opening something called Le Parc Bistrobar a few blocks from Union Square this summer. Chemel, whom Bay Area diners should know from his onetime two-Michelin-starred restaurant Baumé in Palo Alto, and later its rebrand as Bistronomie by Baumé, made headlines in 2021 when he celebrated the loss of those two Michelin stars. Chemel, who had previously vied for three-star status, told the media that maintaining Michelin status had become a "distraction" and the inspectors had an ..read more

New IKEA Food Hall Has Complaint From Illustrator Who Says Their Logo ‘Blatantly Copied’ His Work

A mere one day after opening, SF’s IKEA-adjacent food court Saluhall has drawn the ire of an SF illustrator who says their ‘eyes-ears-nose-mouth’ logo is a rip-off of his own illustration published in The New Yorker. Thursday saw the opening of that gigantic new two-story food court Sulehall, an IKEA-affiliated offshoot in their new Fifth and Market street location. And the London Breed opening video below has been making the rounds, showing Breed urging people to come visit the place, and with its new logo of a disjointed eye, ear, mouth and nose visible on the food hall’s walls, doors, and ..read more

Petit Crenn will close in September after a final few months of dinners, Portola gets a new cocktail bar and pizza spot, and Alora gets a Chronicle review. In significant news for Hayes Valley, chef Dominique Crenn has announced that Petit Crenn will permanently close in September, when the current lease expires. Until then, there will be five months of dinners there and a chance for fans to say goodbye to the place, which opened in 2015 but has only been intermittently open since 2020. The casual cousin of Atelier Crenn began serving up rustic Breton-style cuisine, which as Crenn said was th ..read more
