How to Sew a Baby Blanket By Recycling a Muslin Swaddle

It's February now, and our new daughter has arrived - welcome to the family, Talia! With baby on the way, I used my winter break to make a baby blanket for her. Picking the fabric I had planned to use up some green and blue minky that I had left over from the stuffed dragon I made for Rami, so I knew I wanted to use that for one side. Holiday Gift Ideas: Sew a Stuffed Dragon Plush for Kids For Rami this year, I knew I wanted to make a stuffed animal. He has always beena sweet, cuddly boy who loves his animals, and over the summer, he always wantedto hear bed time stories about dragons, so ..read more

Christmas 2021: Apple Slice Purse

For Saira's Christmas present, she actually requested a purse! I had found an adorable purse pattern from STITCHED by Crystal, and thought she might like a watermelon or lemon purse. I showed her the purse and she loved it, but she specifically wanted the apple slice purse. Looking through the pattern page, I realized that the actual pattern doesn't seem to be available anymore except through a Google Doc. I asked for permission to access it several times, but I'm guessing that because it was published 7 year ago, maybe the Gmail that is associated with that account just isn't used anymore. Christmas 2021: DIY Captain America Shield
Looks Good to Us

For Christmas this year, Rami asked for a Captain America shield to go with his Captain America costume. How could I say no to this face? Previously, like in the photo above, he had been playing with a metal shield that was actually meant as a wall decoration. There is nothing to really hold onto on the back, and the shield just isn't meant to be used as a toy. I'm always nervous he's going to try to throw it or hit someone with it accidentally. I've looked at Target and elsewhere for Captain America shields, and they are all so flimsy and not built to be played with by a rowdy 4 year old wit ..read more

Trying Something New: Sherpa Fleece Jackets for Winter

Recently, a neighbor of ours passed away, and the family had a big estate sale to clear out her house. She happened to have a sewing hobby, so I was able to pick up a ton of thread, elastic, and some sewing patterns that I thought might be interesting to try out. I've actually never used a purchased pattern from a sewing company, I've only use purchased-and-printed patterns at home. I was excited to get going on it. The pattern is for a cute jacket, and isn't necessarily meant for sherpa fabric, but I figured I could try it out with sherpa and see if it works. I bought 4 yards of sherpa fabri ..read more

Summer Nightgowns (via Sew Much Ado)

Recently, as I was putting Saira to bed, she told me she wanted to wear her new dinosaur dress to bed. I told her that her dress was for daytime, and that she would have to wear pajamas to bed. She burst into tears, as a 2 year old told "no" tends to do, and I comforted her while saying, "Maybe I could make you a nightgown!" She hadn't heard of that before, so with her interest piqued, she stopped crying. I explained that a nightgown is a dress you can wear to bed, and that I used to have a Care Bears nightgown when I was a kid. Then she wanted to know what Care Bears were. It was a whole thin ..read more

We try to do one "big" trip a year as a family and for the past few years, it has been to National Parks. One summer we visited Cassie's sister in Hawaii and went to Volcanoes National Park. Another summer we went up north with friends to Voyageurs, and another summer we road-tripped over to Glacier. When our kids were born, we bought them the National Park passports to collect and commemorate all of our trips. They love looking through their stamps and ask about which parks they've seen. This July we're planning another road trip with stops in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri. We a ..read more
